Spidertraxx - More Harm Than Good?

I have been considering getting Spidertraxx spacers to compliment my lift, but I have heard that there are potential problems that can arise from using those spacers, such as some sort of damage to suspension components or axles or something. It should be pretty obvious at this point that I have no idea what I'm talking about, that is why I am asking you wonderful, knowledgeable folks. So basically, are Spidertraxx worth getting or are they gonna do more harm than good.

Also, and this is probably the most important question in this thread: will they hurt my gas mileage any more than the lift already does?

HAHAHA! I'm about to jump the gun on the Spidertax. The thing with Spidertrax is that they are more Wheel ADAPTERS more-so than wheel spacers. Wheel spacers are usually just that, Large washers to space out and use the same lugs. But with the spidertrax they attach to the old lugs and then have their own for the wheel.

Once again...Highly suggest.

Forgot to mention that there is a chance you could see some damage from them in the LOOOOONNNG run but from what i have researched you wont see anything for at least 100k miles
 
Wheel spacers increase the moment that the normal force from the tires exert on the bearings. That is to say, they increase the stress on the bearings. This will lead to faster wear on the bearings. That being said, this increase in wear may or may not be significant.

Spacers should not change your milage.
 
wheel spaces will stress out the axels alil bit. the longer the axel is and more stress will deploy by the heavy cabin similar to a pencil when u hold it in ur palms and push with ur thumbs. its easier to break a long pencil than a short one right? also like the guuy above said, it will stress the bearings abit,i have em and i think they are the shit! its got a better stance. but i only have em in the rear lol. handling is abit better (much better with xreas) :)

For those of you with them on the front, how does it affect steering? Presumably it stresses the steering components somewhat, but do you feel a difference driving?
 
Also wondering: can these be installed by yourself? (I'm not the type of person who can install a lift if that tells you anything.) If not, how much would it probably cost to install these at a shop?
 
i know there are alot of people have spidertrax & have been running then for as while with no problems at all. as far as installing. just take the wheel off and put the spacer on the hub , torque the lugs on , put you wheel back on. i have look at alot of threads about spacers. as i was reluctent to get them. i have not hear of anyone having a problem from them. i will be ordering my soon , that for sure
 
liqourish: Can you post a picture or give some more info on the handling of the spacers just in the rear?

Is there any reason you have to have a lift to use the spacers?
 
just remember, in some states theyre illegal & you might have to take them off when you go for state inspection, you ll also have to check every now & then for tightness, other than that, you should be fine .
 
Also be aware in those states where spacers are illegal and you have an accident I've heard some insurance companies will have an issue with that if the vehicle is inspected post accident. I don't know this for fact but it might be worth researching.

Are there any other places to buy Spidertraxx spacers other than going directly through their website or are they the cheapest price anyways?

I dont see how a wider track width would negatively impact steering ability or put any extra stress on the steering system...
 
It seems that Spidertrax are the most popular spacers out there but are there any other companies that make a Hub-Centric spacer? Are there any other widths available? Does anyone have experience with other manufacturers of this type of spacer?

IMHO they won't affect the bearing much if at all... As far as steering components are concerned the arguement centers around the "lever arm" issue. The farther out the wheel is the more little grooves, bumps etc try to steer the vehicle and the more you have to use the steering to stay on track thus adding wear.

With the amount of width added by the Spidertrax the wear is probably damn close to nil. In other words if tie-rods would last you 145k they may only last 141k. To those who say I put Spidertrax and had a bearing/steering issue early I would argue that's probably more related to the "enthusiast factor". Anybody who uses them is more likely to off-road etc. than a non-user.

You dont have to have a lift. I have it for the more agressive look than a pansy stance. I cant really describe the handling (i had gotten used to it lol, not like i do any crazy turns, knowing its a trucks scares the shit outa me when whipping it around).

ill have pics of it posted it up when i get the chance. :bigok:
