Spoiler Install

I ordered a spoiler from Toyota and will have it installed on my 2005 SE by a local body shop. The body shop seems to think that the template is not really necessary to perform the install. I've seen pictures of the template and it looks like it was assembled from irrigation parts from Home Depot. Is this template a gimmick? Has anyone used this template?

Yeah, they told me the same thing and then called me back to tell me that they don't recommend putting one on after market. I have heard all kinds of storys both pro and con regarding this issue. I have given up on getting one installed.

As per the template...it looks like a pile of pvc crap! And, you can only get a template in the factory. No dealer has one. So thus they just wing it! Good luck.

Template is absolutely needed to installed factory rear spoiler. Yeah, it looks like a punch of handycrap PVC pipe, but regardless of how it look, it does the job. I've seen Courtesy Toyota installed the spoiler with the template, and all I can say is there's NO way you or any body shops can install factory spoiler perfectly with out the template. Courtesy Toyota does offer its customer to borrow the template for a $40 deposit. The money will refunded after you return the kit. Hope this help
p/s: Remember, only a few of Toyota dealers in Southeast region has the template. Example: A big dealer like Central Florida Toyota doesn't have it.

I know...that was my point. My dealer doesn't feel comfortable doing it. FYI Florida Toyota is a separate conglomerate from USA Toyota. That is why you can get different accessories with different part numbers from Florida Toyota. When my dealer was originally going to install the spoiler for me they had to order it from a Florida Dealer. Since Florida okays this, they have the template. Ohio does not have a template and thus they didn't feel comfortable installing the spoiler on my truck. However, there IS an outside company in Columbus that developed their own template and will install the part from Florida for actually less money but I didn't feel comfortable.

Had the OEM spoiler installed today

The body shop that I used was able to install the spoiler without the template and it came out great! They ordered it from a local Toyota dealer. Total price installed .... $420.00

I got an after market one from spoilerdepot.com
Can't remember the price - it was last june. Came painted Glactic Gay.

It was pretty slick how it went on. It came with these little pointed studs that went into the bolt locations on the spoiler. You put them in, put the spoiler where you wanted it (make sure it's not hitting the roof with the hatch open). Then you tap the outside of the spoiler with a hammer or something hard. The pointed studs make little marks showing where to drill. Kind of like a center punch mark.

Very slick and took all of 30 min. Hardest part was drilling into my new rig!

I don't need no stinking template!
