spongy brake pedal

Hello Everyone,

I own a 2007 SR5 4runner. Since it had 10.000 kms I am invoking warranty because their brake gives an ineffectiveness sensation. It brakes well, but the pedal travel varies. Sometimes the pedal travel is short sometimes is longer.
Toyota profusely revised the brake system and no damage or malfunction had been found. Now I have 37.000 kilometer and the symptoms persist and Toyota is “investigating” the problem. They told me that the case was sent to Japan.

Have someone similar symptoms in his/her 4runner?

Yes, I have noticed the same behavior on my '03. Braking performance itself doesn't appear to be effected, but the initial pedal firmness varies. It feels like a booster of some sort needs to be charged to get the firmer pedal. If you lightly press the pedal, release, and then press again it will give you the firmer pedal, but if enough time passes without brake engagement, the initial pedal goes softer again. I've bled the system a couple of times and recently replaced pads/rotors with no change in this behavior so have written it off as normal since actual braking performance isn't compromised.

I have a 2004 V6 with 133K. Maybe about 10K ago I started noticing a problem with the brake pedal feel. When the brakes are first applied the pedal has a bit of travel. If I let up a bit then push down there is a much firmer feeling.
I asked a mechanic and he really was not sure. The brakes are good, even when applied with the additional travel the vehicle stops fine.
I still have some concern as we do tow a boat on occasion and I am concerned if this is a developing problem that may get worse. Bruce

Hello,

Toyota (not a distributor) had my car for 3 days. They tested everything and nothing abnormal was found.
Toyota recognizes that the braking feel is not good, but they do not what causes it.
