Sport models

I am in the market for a '96 and up 4runner. I see the sport models coming up every so often. What are all the differences/upgrades with the sport edition? How does the air vent on the hood function? Would I have to ever worry about water getting in there?

the scoops are closed, though you can open them to allow a little cooling to the engine bay... as far as getting water in there? unless you plan on driving deeper than this

then i say dont worry about it

Sports were 01 and 02, maybe 00, before that it was the Highlander package which started in 99 IIRC. You get the hood scoop, sport bucket seats, aluminum looking dash inserts, sun roof, sport rims, color keyed bumpers, flares and mirrors and some later models came w/ tube steps instead of running boards.

sunroof was optional.
what really came with it was the sport seats, they are runningboards but do not connect with the flares as limited running boards did. quarter inch thicker sway bars.
color keyed everything except for the 99 highlanders.

99-00 = highlander
01 = sport pkg
02 = sport edition

My bad on the sunroof, I thought it was standard on the Sport. But my 02 did not come with running boards, it came with tube steps like I said in my post, they are nothing like the running boards on some Sports like you mentioned. And I am fairly certain the dash trim being the silver color is part of the Sport package.

The sport tubes were only offered with the '02s;mine never had running boards which was nice since I got the front mudflaps instead.

show me these tube steps, curious as to what they look like in comparison, i havent seen one yet

I assume they look like manik nerf bars?

Yeah, what the photo shows basically. My truck is the greyish color, thundercloud IIRC, and the tubes are painted to match, that picture makes them look funny as they are not body colored. I think they look nicer than the running boards, closer to the look w/o running boards, but I do like having something as they have stopped shopping carts and doors from hitting the body and I really have no use for sliders.
