Spot under the climate control switches

Has anyone figured out what's behind that pop out panel under the climate control switches? I'm wondering why there is no electrical plug there for accessories?

Has anyone modded that area for a more productive purpose than a crappy thin plastic pocket? Seeing more of this grey wood grained shiny craplastic is my only gripe with an otherwise nice truck interior.

Grab it by the sides and it pops out revealing nothing, you have to pull the whole panel to access anything. I mounted a remote speaker for my CB & HAM there.

No room

IIRC, when you take the dash out (HVAC and radio bezel), there's a big wire bundle. Not alot of room to install anything there.

Enough room for a plug outlet and a 3.5/usb jack?

its much easier to pop out the panel and see for yourself, it literally takes about 10 seconds

Here is a shot of that area. Almost no room behind it.
Also note where I installed a 12v outlet (the panel is upside down). it's centered below the hazard switch on the opposite side as the 4WD switch.

I put my AFR Gauge in mine. I had to cut and hack it a little bit and put in a metal plate to mount the gauge.

I'm going to pick up my new (used) 4runner tuesday. Minus the preventive maintenance I plan on doing that same day that's one of my first to do's.

I still have my cobra that I pulled from my duramax, so I'll be taking measurements and making some plans.

There isn't a whole lot of other places to put a CB from what I can see, besides that pocket.

Make sure to document it! I thought about trying to put one below my radio (single din) or in the center console... it's definitely tough to integrate and have it look OEM.

Yeah, I think that's everyone's end goal to have it look OEM. I was actually emailing some shops around here about my plans with the CB to see if they could help with a custom face plate or bezel around the front face of the radio. Hopefully I will hear back from them once the work week starts.

In my truck I just had my radio laying on the floor and it annoyed the hell out of me... and Thank you! I can't wait to pick this thing up!

Well, like an idiot, I sold my truck this morning and left my coax cable in the truck! I had it all tucked and hidden away and didn't even think to remove it.

Now I have to go and ask for it back :brick:

Once I pick up the toyota tomorrow, the fun starts!

I can't remember who it was but they had made a custom console to replace the sunglass holder. It held the cb and even had custom map lights. It was a really clean install.
