i didn't paint my runner but i did rattle can my '88. used about 7 cans of krylon in desert tan. actually came out pretty good.

I painted a car with spray paint, half assed it really, but it came out pretty good. Some more effort and it could have looked really good.
The paint was SEM Trim Black. I bought it from a paint specialty store for around $15 a can. The paint job cost around $125 total. I didn't spend a lot of time on prep and I only did one thick coat. A good amount of effort and two or more coats could bring you up to $300ish.

This topic is near and dear to my heart because it's gonna happen to my truck sooner or later. How do you guys prep before painting? What grit sandpaper? Do you have to get it down to bare metal, or just get the pitiful remnant of the clearcoat off?

Ive used valspar spray paint on a couple things now and im loving it.

I forgot what grit I used but I didn't do too much prep work before painting. I just lightly scuffed up the clear coat (wasn't really much left to begin with). Masked where necessary and let'er rip!!!

Mine isn't a rattle can job. I used a paint roller and and rustoleum.

I just painted a chrome grille OEM titanium metallic and my steps were the following:
sand with 80 grit,
sand with 160 (i think, somewhere there abouts)
Plastic parts adhesion promoter (may be a scam :shrug
Filler primer, 4 coats
Sand with 600 grit till smooth as per the primer instructions (had to do 220 in some spots where there were dimples, sand down then re prime then 600)
3 coats of color
Now, i suppose you could sand here, but I didn't and I wish I did, i have a few imperfections
4+ coats of clear
let dry
wet sand 1500 grit
buff

I'm not so sure about rattle canning an entire rig, but 400-600 works best for doing quick prep over old paint without having scratches show through.

Hey...been thinking about this too. I don't want to drop hundreds in a nice paint job just to scratch or dent the $#!+ out of it on a trail, and have to start over.
So I guess my real question...I'm about to start body work on my 1st gen. Is the rattle can primer fine after I smooth out a few dings?
Also...how do you get the rattle can paint to stick, and not chip within the year?

I've not rattled canned an entire car before, but when I do rattle can, I find it helps to soak the cans in a bucket of hot water for a bit before using it. It pressurizes the can a bit more and seems to make the paint spray in a finer mist. Of course use some common sense with the water temperatures and don't boil them

Whats so bad about plasti-dip? When compared to a rattle can flat job. It is relatively easy to apply, it is self leveling, cheap, and easy to remove and re-apply if it does get messed up. Granted it isn't the perfect solution, but I would think it is better in many ways when compared to a flat black rattle can job.

I plastidipped my fender flares and after wheeling accidently just touched it with a pay and spray wash nozzle and away it flew. I just recently removed it all and repainted it with black trim spray paint. I used a gray scotchbright pad to rough up the surface and then just wiped it down with W&G removed and then alcohol. It seem to be holding up really well.
I remember Earl Schieb, are they still around (paint any car alive for 69.95) I actually had an 81 prelude painted by them. I masked it myself and it actually turned out nice

It isn't paint. It's not meant to protect what's underneath it. I'm taking a big enough shortcut by resorting to a rattlecan paint job, I don't need to make it any worse.
