Spring "overland" trip George Washington National Forest

Beginning to get packed here. I'm trying to not bring as much crap so got a couple Rubbermaid Action packer tubs and a couple wolf packs for the roof. We'll see how it goes.

I'll be in training at work this week, so I can't wait for Friday to get here.

Well, as luck would have it, I am not going to be able to meet you all in Harrisonburg Friday morning. We are testing out of our course that morning and the instructors have claimed we'll get out of class by 1000 at the latest. So assuming I get out at 1000, hit up Food Lion enroute, I should be "somewhere" in GWNF around 12-1230ish. I will likely try and catch up on the trail enroute or go straight to the lake and chill out with any other late comer that is hanging out there. I have the routes DLd already on GAIA and am tracking the CB channels so I should be able to catch up.

Bummer. Glad to hear you're​ not going to miss the whole thing though.

Depending on your timing, you'll probably be able to catch up with us during lunch at Flagpole. Definitely give us a shout on the CB as you get close on the trail and we can at least let you know where we are. Better yet, a truck or two could potentially come and meet you then​ reconnect with the group.

Getting super excited to meet everyone! the more I think about it I believe I will stay the night and camp with everyone. I may bring along 10 to 15 logs of firewood, does anyone who will be heading to the campsite have space to store those to drop off so I dont have them bouncing around the back of my runner all day?

Not to be the self appointed park-ranger here but I think because of fear of the ash-borer bug they don't like people bringing in their own firewood from outside the area? Not that the offer isn't appreciated. Just don't want you getting stopped by trigger happy Park Rangers over contraband wood olice:

Please do let me know, I mainly have hickory, some cherry and oak to burn. I don't want to break any laws that's for sure. I usually inspect my wood as I bring it into my house and I haven't noticed any borer bug damage in my wood yet, but the rules are rules.

I did find it that they prefer we not bring in firewood. That's a bummer I do have some nice clean dry wood I would have liked to use.

Upon reading more about the EAB it only infects ash wood for some reason. It is a shame since I know I dont have any Ash in my wood pile.

Better to bring a saw and just cut up some nearby dead fall. Easier to do and you won't have to worry about it bumping around your truck.

Bring some good wood to get the fire going. It's looking like there will be heavy rains Thursday. If you have any Big halfs or quarters we can use as benching logs in the fire that would be awesome!

Not gonna lie those terms I am unfamiliar with. I will grab the biggest pieces I have for the trip. Unless you really wanna see my wood lmao :biggrin2:

Unless those terms mean where the log was split in half and left at that and then the quartered was cut into fourths. Then yes I should have some good pieces for us to utilize!

Wood pics are so hot!

Here is how to utilize benching logs. Start your fire and get a decent bed of coals, add two large quarter or half rounds flanking the coals. Then add burn wood on top.
