Spring "overland" trip George Washington National Forest

Thinking about this trip if its raining over there on union springs road that will help keep the dust down tomorrow as we go past Union springs lake!

Sidenote* What is everyone's plans for Dinner? I have plenty of liquid lunch and Dinner, Does anyone intend to eat something solid?

I am bring some Pork ribs barbecue and bake bean for Friday dinner. You / other can try if you like.

does anyone cook out the old fashioned way? I bought one of those camp grills where you put it over a fire... the old school way. Seeing a lot of stoves people are bringing.

I may end up camping with you guys Friday night and just heading back early Saturday.

If I brought a piece of meat, would anybody have a grill I could throw it on? I'll bring my own if need by, figured there will be several and wanted to double check before packing.

We're leaving Saturday morning as well...we can ride back to RVA just in case....

You kidding? That's part of the fun for me. I have steaks for dinner eggs/bacon for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch.

Fridge is packed and ready- Guinness and juice boxes FTW!

Everything is ready- even kept a nice big spot for the rugrat to snooze.

I was thinking steak but didn't want to fool with utensils. Ill work on the ribs tonight and cook them some so I can finish them tomorrow. Hell I may throw them over some of the hickory wood I am bringing along!

Anyone have an SWR meter they can bring? Can't find mine since moving and may not have time to buy a new one today.

I'm still a maybe.

Just dropped off new Pelfreybilt bumper (above) for paint. Most I've seen are matte black. I'm going with oem black to match body. May be harder to touch up, but that's a trade-off I'm happy with.

We'll see if I can wrap up this project before the trip. I hope so.

Also have a conflicting trip with extended family. Not clear yet whether I'm going tho. Will post here when commitments firm up.

Looks like I'm not going to make it. Disappointing. I'll look into running the same route before the next trip.

I haven't gotten completely into the cooking part of camping yet so I've got liquids and will pickup a couple of Subway foot longs and bad-for-you snacks.

I figure a nice meal at the Brew-Pub (and getting to use a real, porcelain toilet - hope they're on city water) will add the variety.

Otherwise...I'm in it for the wheelin' fun!

Oh and hoping to get some cool photography going, maybe even experiment with pictures of the night sky, campfire etc. I have a decent SLR with a wide lens for the group-shot.

Finally got home and did two things. Awning has been in the garage since last April. Hi-lift... (embarrassingly) has been sitting in my garage since my first Cove trip in 2014! Both gifts from hubby. Well he technically won the jack.... anyway.... ran into trouble mounting the awning with a hardware issue. Nothing a $6 trip to Lowe's couldn't solve. Now to pack the rest.... I may be up until midnight at this rate... hah!

Great question! Time for a last minute trip update:

I ran up Union springs all the way to Flagpole today then down Dunkle Hollow road. Was making good time until I got stuck behind a pretty serious accident on 33 west of salt shed. Had to wait 1.75hr before 33 reopened.

The trail:
Main-trail mudholes full, but all easily passable in 4-hi

Stream crossings all low and non-sketchy despite all the rain we had further north

Trees down/dead fall non-existent when I passed through (running my RTT). There were a couple of branches that I got out and cleared and a few sketchy low-hangars on Dunkle Hollow, but all good otherwise.

Looking like it's still going to be a little chilly tomorrow night, but all else looks A-Ok.
