Spring Rate Question

Hello Forum,
I am hoping to get some advice on some changes I will be making to my 2018 SR5 non KDSS.
Here is what I am adding:
low profile bumper (74lbs)
winch (66lbs)

I am currently running (no winch or bumper) OEM Kings (550 springs) and after a lot of research, have the front drivers side with 8 threads and passenger at 6 threads. The truck currently sits and drives great like this.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on some King 650 springs based on the new weight I will be adding.

1. Do you think it's absolutely necessary to install these (650) springs with the new weight upfront?
2. If 1 is yes, then what preload would you put on them to keep the height in check. Would I want to mimic the 550 setup and go with similar preload I had dialed there, or just go like 3 threads on driver and 0 on passenger.

Hope this makes sense, and appreciate any advice!

Yes, I would upgrade the spring, but I couldn't tell you how much pre-load it would take to achieve the same height as before. I'm sure somebody here has a very similar setup and they could get a measurement for you that would get you in the ballpark.

I would definitely upgrade to the 650 springs. They will handle that weight perfectly. As far as preload, i would just add the bumper and winch, then dial it in depending on how i want the truck to sit!

Thanks for the input guys. I wish you could easily adjust these Kings "on the fly" like Icons, so I was hoping I could copy someone with a similar setup to take my chances on getting it right the first time.

Let me also throw this question out there. If I didn't add the winch, (still on the fence about it) and only added the bumper (74lbs) would it still be a good idea to replace my 550's with the 650 springs?

Calling All Kings: an informational survey

Post #7 is running SSO bumper / winch with 650# coils @ 3(D) / 3(P) for about 1.5"-2" lift.

Post #2 is running an alumninum bumper / winch at a similar weight with 600# @ 8(D) / 8(P) threads showing and considering 650# for less preload.

Post #32 is mine running the aluminum bumper / winch with 550# @ 12(D) / 10(P) threads showing. I will be changing to either 600# or likely 650# springs to reduce the preload, but it hasn't been a huge impact thus far. I'm not sure why Filthymotorsports suggested stock 550# springs with the list i provided of extra weight. I'm also not sure why i didn't push back because it just didn't seem right.

1) based on that i would say you chose appropriately and even have some extra capacity if other weight is added (2nd battery, compressor, etc)

2) hard to say best guess is 6(D) / 4(P). measure hub-fender before you change anything and then adjust as necessary before your alignment until achieve the same height

I figured you were trying to get it right the first time and get some settings from someone. I would try to do the same if i had the King's also. I hate redoing something when I can ask around and get it right the first time. Hopefully someone will chime in.

As far as the weight, I wouldn't swap out coils for just 74 pounds up front, but then again, i would definitely add the winch if i was adding the lo pro bumper. It will come in handy one day when you least expect it.

Long story short, I would add 650's for both bumper and winch, and keep the 550's for only the bumper.

To be honest, I am not sure I made the right decision on the winch. I had the wife's permission, but I think I overshot my needs. I have a Superwinch Talon 9.5 SR in the mail arriving today. I had a M800 on my old Tacoma and if I'm being honest, I think I used it 3 times in 4 years. Do I really need a winch and do I really need one like this? I am torn on returning it and saying screw a winch, returning it and getting the smitty X20, or just keeping it as it's not stirring any wife waters. LOL
