I have read a lot about people using different springs for the rear end and I was wondering if some of you 4Runner experts could help me out.

Can you cut just about any spring set-up to make it fit in the 1st Gens. I have seen people using a variety of options. Reason for the question is mine has the rear sag pretty bad and a guy locally has some rear springs from an '09. If I can cut them to make them work then I would like to go pick them up but I hate to grab something that someone else could use if it is just gonna end up in a pile at the house.

If you're referring to the ZUK mod then I would steer away from it. In my mind, it's a cheap fix and is fixing rear sag the wrong way. If you're talking about leaf springs then for the short answer, yes. Any leaf spring can work. But depending on the springs you use you cannot just cut them to make them fit. You'll have to re-locate your hangars and shackles which requires cutting and welding.

Coil springs have different diameters, lengths, and spring rates. Give it a shot and see what happens, but I agree with SV - I have a zukmod, and I don't like it.

Skip cutting springs. You might consider a set of MOOG 225 springs and urethane bushings for the rear/lateral control arms. This way, you'll never have a sag issue again and the parts are relatively inexpensive. The truck will drive much better as well.

summit racing has new 0 lift springs for 300 for the pair and +2 lift springs for 330 for the pair.
if you do weld in new set up make sure you use levels and squares and sextuplet check everything before you finish weld or your rear end could be going sideways down the road.

Guys, he's got a first gen. He's not talking about springs that are supposed to be there, he's talking about stuffing an extra coil spring between his leaf springs and the frame, as a helper.

Not true any spring can fit and frame if you just put new spring hangers in.
if you have 2inch spring hangers ANY 2 inch wide leaf spring will fit as long as it also matches the length between hangers.
just like the chevy leafs that fit the 4runner i cant remember the length but they are a common for cheap lifts on a solid axle.

New Leafs / Zuk Mod (Springs)?

Thanks everyone. There were some points here that I had not considered. I think I will forgo this mod/idea and focus on replacing the leafs.

ANY 2 inch wide leaf spring will fit as long as it also matches the length between hangers.
just like the chevy leafs that fit the 4runner i cant remember the length but they are a common for cheap lifts on a solid axle.

The Chevy springs aren't usually installed for lift, they're installed because of the amount of flex the 63" springs have compared to the stock 48" springs.
They do create some lift (2-3") partly due to moving the front mounts much farther forward on the frame where it is lower. The springs them selves are fairly flat (which also makes them flex better).

The Chevy swap also requires a good bit of work cutting/grind/welding and fabbing new front and rear mounts.
