Square Tube Bumper

Thanks, we ended up taking the bumper to our friends house where we re did the welding process and it turned out a lot better the welds were really good I just wished I took a picture of it. But I do agree with you, we are still working to give the bumper a better look by curving the edges of it to fit the body style instead of sticking out and light mounts. Our safety could have been a whole lot better in our first run at welding. In the end we ended up re welding the existing welds at my friends house who had a full tank of. The only design issue I see (and its huge) is that the sides stick out so much that when pulling in or out of parking spots it looks as if you will scrap against the car next to you.

The bumper really shouldn't stick out farther than the flares.

It is good to see this kind of custom work. Definite props to you for building your own.
 
Thanks man I agree and it looks really bad from some angles. After the weather gets a little better in Houston we are going to go to work on the edges of the bumper by either cutting some of the sides off or curving it in to align with the fenders. I'm really glad you seem to be taking all the advice so well, a lot of people would get all but hurt by the criticism. I think with the changes stated, it will look good, and props to getting out in the garage and building it!
 
It's coming along.... good job on trying something new! I'm glad you're taking other people's advice, and working on improving the design, that being said... I've had my share of criticism, when I built my rear tire carrier.... check out this thread, to see what other's said about my idea...

Op are you building the bumper for off road purpose(approaching angles ect ect), or zombie clean up purpose? it looks like you are 2wd. in that case build the most badass zombie bumper ever, go big or go home right lol

Haha yeah in 2WD but I do go offroad. I built the bumper bc of 3 reasons, my stock bumper had loads of chipped paint, my previous brush guard weighed down the front end of my 4R and lastly because I faced planted into a little hole on some trails and ****ed up my license plate and the lower part of my guard. So I guess it was more for the angles of offroad, but at the same time I like the whole zombie idea lol. I'll throw a pic up of the aftermath of my trail story when I get home lol
 
I don't even know the first thing about welding or fabbing, so kudos to you guys for getting into it. I'm interested to see the final product.
 
If you are using solid wire without gas there would be lots of tiny holes in the welds. A quick glance at the pictures and it looked cold to me.

Have you got burns yet from the UV on all that unprotected skin? Cover up and get in there close to get a good view of the puddle and a more consistent bead.
 
Hmm. Kinda reminds me of a spotter or chase truck for an oversize load big rig. It seems like it would get caught on things a lot easier off-road as well. I do like the idea of custom fabrication though, good luck on your build.
