Squeaking in reverse!

I have a loud, obnoxious squeaking noise whenever I'm in reverse. I don't know what is causing it. It doesn't happen when I'm in drive but only reverse. I'm assuming it's coming from the brakes. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a quick fix?

* I posted this in the 3rd Gen forum because I have a '97 Limited but I was going to post here because some of you might not check the 3rd gen forums and I was hoping to get an answer soon because if nobody has a quick fix then I will probably take it in tomorrow.

Does it sound sort of like metal on metal? And is it more of a low pitched squeak/squeal/gron? Or is it high pitched

I don't know if it's metal on metal but it is definitely HIGH pitched. Fingernails on a chalkboard! Do you have any ideas of possible problems?

The parking / emergency brake isn't fully disengaged?

If it's when you're foot is touching the brakes (even very lightly), then it's the brakes.....worse when it's wet out.

It's a common problem with newer Tundras, Tacomas and 4Runners with no real fix. Changing pads doesn't seem to fix it and neither does chamfering the pad edges. Aftermarket pads perhaps, but I have 0 experience with those.


Edit: I missed that your's was a 97.....I was thinking of a 4rth gen. Brakes are still the 1st place I'd check tho.

I know with my mustang everytime I would back out of my driveway and apply the brakes I would hear this loud groaning metal on metal sound. Has to do with the roters and like North said there really isn't anything you can do about it, you can replace the rotors but you don't need to. It's not doing harm(according to firestone) all it does is make that sound.

Most vehicles have a feature that self-adjusts the parking brake when reversing... Check the brakes on the rear to make sure they are glazed or that you have some dust (97 has drum brakes, right?)... Remember not to inhale as you blow out the drums and that dust (better yet, use goggles and a dust mask).
