Squeaky power steering pump

Hoping for a little help again. I just changed the belts on my 97 V6 4runner and I can't seem to figure out how to make the power steering pump not squeak. I've tried multiple different positions for the pump allowing a little slack on the belt all the way to as tight as I can get it and I still have the noise. Has anyone else experienced this and if so did I mess something up?

I have tried tightening the belt, there are no clearance issues as best I can figure, and the noise was not an issue before the belt change.

Did you use OEM belts?
Do you hear this sound only when you make a turn?

You can pour some water right on to the belt and see whether the sound disappears. If it does, your belt is bad.

It can be a little sketchy to do with the fan spinning around but I found ifnyou have it running and you take a crayon and hold it to the inside of the belt and get a Little of the wax on it'll take the squeal away. Yeah it's ghetto but it works

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the power steering pump pulley. It never squealed until I changed the belt. It had some in/out play in it. It quit squealing when I replaced it.

I hadn't cosidered the quality of the belts being an issue but they're mid level. Not OEM but I still spent a decent chunk of change on them. I'll give the water and/or wax idea a shot.

The pulley is an interesting idea. I'll try to give it a wiggle and maybe hit the hub with some bearing grease? I hate the idea of flat out replacing it, but if all else fails I can give it a shot.

you can get a spray can at NAPA, called "belt dressing". Its sticky black stuff and you spray a bit on your belts to stop them from squealing.

Thanks for the help guys! I hit the back side of the pulley (where the shaft goes into the pump) with a little wd-40 and that seemed to take care of the problem.

I know this is an old thread, but just in case someone found it like I did, searching for a squeaky PS pulley.
Don't use that belt dressing. That stuff is horrible. It will maybe mask your real problem for a few minutes, but then just makes it louder.
stay away

yes old thread....but did it squeek before also ? Timmy has a video on changing the fluid and cleaning the reservoir and screen as a clogged screen makes pump work harder adn make noise
