Squeal When Near Building

So when I’m out in the open my 4Runner sounds great. When I pull into a drive thru I hear a squeal when I get near the building. Any ideas? Normal? I didn’t notice when I first got the truck brand new, it has 17k miles but I’ve heard it since before 10k.

TIA

I'm guessing the noise is always there, but you're only hearing it when you drive by the building and the sound is reflected. Have a friend drive it, so you can check this yourself. No idea if it's reflective of a problem. Need more info to begin to try and diagnose.

You should avoid that drive thru. Maybe some paranormal activity in that particular lane is getting disturbed by the presence of the 4runner.

Holy crap, that’s it. But I don’t hear it when driving only when I’m near a building on the left side like a drive thru.

Same here, it's very noticeable when in an enclosed area. Mine has gotten very loud like you hear in the video. Also on the left side. Only happens under 20mph though. Sometimes it'll stop if I tap the brakes fast. But then give it a quick tap on the gas and let off, it'll start back up again.

I'm gonna go with laserdemon and chalk my sound up to the brakes. I've had a CV seals replaced and thought that might be it. Or a bad hub but I don't have any grinding sounds. Dirt on the brake pads maybe?
Haven't seen any leaks or failures so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My brake pads are due for a change maybe this year. If I swap rotors also and the noise goes away, 1 of the two solutions worked lol.

Do y’all think this would be covered under the warranty? Breaks and discs seem like that should be covered.

"Wear items", like brake pads are not covered by warranty. Discs may be covered if there is a manufacturing defect. A brake squeal would not be a defect.

Periodic chirping from brakes is pretty common. I had the same issue on my 3rd Gen. There’s probably a small glazed area on the disc that the pad hits. You hear it going slow next to a wall but not at higher speeds. You can verify this by lightly applying the brakes. Probably nothing is functionally wrong but you could have a the discs resurfaced if it really drives you nuts.

For the record, mine happens at all times anywhere under 20mph.

You're still under warranty. Let them know about it and see if they find anything. Wouldn't hurt but some gas and your time.

Mine started to squeak @ around 2K miles, but its not first thing (so far) its after driving 40 minutes with some stoplights, then after sitting for an hour it squeaks on light touch at 10-15mph.

I've attributed it to dust from the 1/2 mile of gravel road I regularly travel and since its really the only time I've noticed the squeak.

Am I an idiot for not bedding the brakes when I first left the Dealer?

Sure hate it when anybody but my mechanic or myself mess with my wheels. Hearing impacts anywhere in the shop is like fingernails on a blackboard. My imagination runs wild at the sound.

Resurfacing and applying the goop behind the pad seems to be the solution. Surprised Toyota hasn't addressed this.

Look between your rotor and dust shield I had a small rock stuck in mine once and you would think this would make the noise all the time but it would be random at times it sounded like I was dragging my skid plate then it would just go away
