check the cv's... mine sounds like that and i'm almost positive its my CV because i tore the boot when doing my lift and it let all the grease out.

I have something else i was trying to figure out, but don't know what to call it to search for it. I know its probably a safety feature, but when it snowed the other day i wanted to have some fun in 2wd, but it wouldn't let me spin the tires it kept applying the brakes.... how do i make it not do that so i can have fun? Again, i didnt know what to call it to search for it, so i apologize if its a common question or what not.

I just tested it... Mine still makes the noise while coasting in Neutral.

Search for the VSC and ATRAC disable. The VSC is a common annoyance with the '01 and '02s since it was the 1st year it was on the 4Runners. You may want to consider disabling the ABS or installing a switch for it too.

Check the gap between the backing plate and rear drums. It's easy to bend that plate just enough so it will rub against the drum and make a squeak or squeal.

Changed my diff and tcase fluids today. Noise is still there. Oh well, good maintenance to be done!

Ok, my noise is gone now! Hopefully it doesnt come back! I went to a reffered shop and the guy was really cool and drove with me and found a noise coming in the back just above the tow hitch. Where it bolts in there is a metal flap thing that can vibrate against the inner edges of the tow bar. He bent that a bit and was also banging around on things under the truck to listen for the squeak. I drove around for a few minutes and the squeak was gone. Then the next day it came back (yesterday). I figured it wasnt just the tow hitch metal flap things, it had to be something else, and the guy just slowed down the squeak temporarily by banging on things. My dads friend looked at it and said its the u-joints, but they are still tight. So he lubed them up, and walaah! no more squeak! Hopefully thats all it was and it doesnt come back, hope this can help you guys

Just looked at these videos. I have experienced the very same annoying chirping this past summer (sounds like its coming from passenger side) - I actually think I posted about it at some point on this very forum. It went away for awhile so I forgot all about it but it reappeared again loud and proud this morning - I then coincidentally came across this post.
I Googled the crap out of this topic a few months back and it seems we are not alone! It would appear that the general consensus does indeed point to the u-joint. I'm going to lube up pronto.

Great - now I'm back to being obsessed with this noise again : )
Just tested this as well and mine also still chirps in neutral while moving and I'm no master mechanic but I think it's safe to say that the drive shaft is not rotating while rolling in neutral? I was only out for about 30 minutes so the truck didn't totally warm up - chirping/squeaking away the whole drive. Gonna get it up on a hoist next week and have my mechanic give it a once over.

what my dads friend did was jack up the rear off the ground, put it in gear, and gave it gas, then identified it was the u joints that needed lube. Mine is squeaking again now, but not nearly as bad as before. My guess is more lube? lol

I am still convinced that it's my trans... I am telling you, once my trans warms up to 110 or so, the noise vanishes.
I am going to have the dealer flush it next month when I get some time.

That's right - of course it is, neutral just disengages the transmission.
A lubing I will go!
Ill be giving this a try also. How do you lube your ujoints?
The noise coming from my 2000 4runner almost sounds like a slightly metalic belt rubbing noise. when inside the car it sounds like its coming from the front passenger side but the other day I had the rear window down it was quite loud and it sounded like it was coming from the back..?
The noise happens though only on the deceleration. I thought maybe the transmission because it does seem to go away after about 30 minutes of driving? but it still comes up every now and then.
Mine seemed to get louder this last weekend when I was driving short hills so I had to get in to the higher RPMs and then the next day it seemed like the noise would not go away.! I sticky U joint would make sense then!
Hopefully this works.

Try greasign the u joint. That solved it for me about a year ago
