sr5 factory rear view camera with aftermarket head unit

After countless hours of searching, all I got was info on factory head units for the traul edition and the limited edition with navigation. So I decided to figure it out myself.

If you are looking to hook up your factory rear view camera to a aftermarket head unit, thus is for you...

Old RCA cable: you will need to cut it and and extended it to tap into the mirror wiring clip.

Wow I totally missed it....haha.... [MENTION=66123]Johnny Utah[/MENTION] used the red wire for feed.... He has a 2011... Mine is a 2013 and I used the white wire for feed and black for ground.

the white wire that we both used is the video feed. We used the same wire for that. I used the red wire on the other side of the plug too. The red wire is the reverse sensing wire. You need that one too, so that when you put the truck into reverse, the headunit knows to switch to that input, so that it can display the camera feed. How else would it know to switch to that input unless something tells it too.

i feel like this has been answered somewhere but ive read countless threads trying to figure this out lol.

I read this from your post:

so for your setup its white truck side wire goes to the rca inner wire, and the red reverse sensing went to the purple reverse signal ... im going to have to try this again but i recall trying this years ago to no avail :L

did you use a 12v to 6v step down for the camera feed ?

I ran a separate wire for the reverse sensor, but followed the recommendation of [MENTION=81350]rnb754[/MENTION] for tapping into the far red and white. I bought a 12ft RCA cable from Amazon for $6 and it worked just fine. At first the signal was shitty but it was because I loosely wired it just to see if I could get a signal. Once I tightened it up, it worked just fine and hasn't failed me since.

Surprisingly, not bad. It's not 4K quality, but it does the trick!

it works! thanks a lot man. the original RCA cable i had used weird methods of wire insulation and grounding so i couldnt figure out which cable should go to which. bought a basic rca 12ft and it worked perfectly

Was this a basic Red/White RCA cable or did you use the yellow ended video cable? Also I'm assuming we are talking about the thinner RCA cables like you would see for the old audio/video hookups from VCRs and DVD players to TV's. Am I correct in assuming all of this? Thanks!

I used a DIY RCA male plug for my last 4runner. Super easy and really nice way to avoid splicing into thin RCA wires. it allowed me make it my setup a bit more durable.

Hey man, I'm pretty new to this site and had a question regarding the RCA cable you used to splice your video feed down to your aftermarket head unit. Was this a normal yellow ended video cable that you stripped or was it something different? Also what type of wire did you use to connect your backup sensing from the red wire down to the back of the head unit? ANY help you can provide would be amazing! Thanks!!

Sorry bro, just saw your message...You ever get your issue figured out? I think i just used an like a regular rca cable...the ones that come in a 3, like red, yellow and white, i pulled off the white one and cut the ends off...that was years ago. lol.

I think i had a solid wire, dont recall the gauge, but i doubt it was one of those braided wires that went from the backup sensing wire..probably a wire spool or a spare wire from radio shack...back when they existed!
