SR5 V6 0-60 time

0-60 times

I remember a thread a while ago about this. And the forum member was racing on a track with a '04 V6 and an '04 V8. As I remember the times came out almost even (V8 took 1 or 2, and V6 took 1 or 2) even when they swapped vehicles.

The real issue is that if you bought the 4R to race with you made a bad choice. Any Altima 3.5 can toast any 4Runner bone stock. As a matter of fact, I'd put up old '02 Maxima against almost any runner here (if I still had her).

Both the V6 and the V8 are quite capable of beating most SUV's on the road these days. V8 has a flatter torque curve which means more grunt on demand - ideal for towing or rock crawling. The V6 has better mileage and more horses (for bragging).

Comparing the V6 and the V8 on 0-60 times really doesn't do the 4Runner justice. This year, for the first time, both V6 and V8 have the same tranny and same gearing. This will definitely add to the fire a little bit on this debate, but in the meantime... Enjoy the truck!

All of the reviews I have seen so far in magazines are only rating the V8 engine because that is what Toyota supplied to them for testing, including MotorTrend, Car & Driver, AutoWeek, and Edmunds.

I don't think he is trying to say he can race with his runner, just comparing it to the V6. I know I can't race with my runner even with the sc. Also know that all data points to the fact that a stock v8 is faster than a stock v6. See link above.

Data

The only relevant data for this discussion would be a test of both a v6 and a v8 4runner under the same conditions. A review of the v8 that has no info for the v6 (or vice versa) isn't very helpful, and a conclusion drawn from it isn't very accurate.

Either engine choice ranks among the fastest mid-size SUV's on the market. Either will serve just fine for a daily driver under any condition. If you regularly tow a large boat or trailer (over 3500 pounds), the v8 is a better choice. If not, either is fine, braggng rights aside :)

So far all data points are V8. So in this respect, the V6 is unproven in track results. Everyone has their preference, and their own reasons for getting the engine they did. A new owner should take both arguments into consideration and make up their own mind. All I am saying is if you are getting the vehicle for 0-60 times, a 4Runner should not be considered.

I agree, 0-60 times is certainly not the reason why I bought my runner. Although I do like talking about my 0-60 times just for the fun of it, especially with other 4runner owners.

I disagree. The data I have seen puts both the v6 and the v8 0-60 times are just under 8 seconds. That is pretty damn fast for a 42000 pound SUV. The only things in the 4runner's size range I have seen that are siginificantly faster are BMW's or Jeep Grand Cherokee's with hemi v8's.

Well all I got to say is HOLY COW!!!!!!!!! What did you do to your engine to get it to accelerate 0-60 in under 8 seconds. Seeing as how you said it weights 42,000 pounds! What mods did you do to it, to get the weight up?!?!?!

I also enjoy a spirited conversation about this stuff, but posts like this really degrade the discussion to a juvenile c0ck measuring contest:

The only place I've seen specs for the V6 is Consumer reports, which totally dogged the V6 due to the abundance of consumer problems with reliability. On the other hand, they loved the V8. Don't be upset that you have a slower 4 Runner, just console yourself with the fact that you get slightly better gass mileage!

Simple. I spilled half a New Belgium Brewery Fat Tire on my keyboard. My "0" has been sticky ever since.

Downside is spilling my beer made me cry :(

Yes, I am for real. My other car is an M3, which does 0-60 in around 4.7 seconds, and I suppose could be considered slow by some as well. The fact that I have an SUV that can out accelerate most other SUV's, as well as many cars, is important to me. And, by the way, this is all in good fun.

:lmao: Are you for real? Dude you bought the wrong type of vehicle if you're going to be trying to race people. You drive a slow truck. So do I. Maybe mine is even slower than yours. Who really cares. Maybe it's faster than other slow SUV's...but it's still slow. Deal with it. :)

I just sold a 350z which at 0-60 in 5.49 seconds there were tons of people calling it slow so I'm finding it really entertaining that anyone with aTRUCK that does 7 seconds plus 0-60 is actually bragging about being fast/faster than someone else...

funny stuff. :D

I am just curious. Has anyone attempted to time their own 4RUNNER going from 0-60? Of course, there will be many variable that affects this. I think we should start this so we can get an average of how EACH model compares.

I own a Solara v6 5 speed. In Car and driver, it is marked flat 7 seconds going 0-60. But doing my own calculation, it is slower than that. (AND YES, i have done it repeatedly revving close to red line everytime).

The guys who do the 0-60 tests are professional drivers, testing on closed tracks under ideal conditions. Gives you an idea of what a vehicle is capable of, but not exactly something that can be duplicated in day to day driving.

OK folks.. you asked for it.

I am copying and pasting my original post made over 6 months ago. To reply to those who want the numbers, these are no lies. I grew up in a racing family and this was the only way to settle it.

Alrighty everyone, the results are in.

Today Doanlaw (04 v8 AWD Sport Edition) and Myself (04 SR5 4x4 v6) took our rigs to Carlsbad Raceway to run some laps and see just how different these two engine setups run under controlled conditions. I think you'll be suprised, we sure were!

First off we made sure everything on each rig was as close as possible. We removed our Spare tires, took out our SUB Boxes, took anything else out that wasn't bolted down and both ran with under 3-4 gallons of gas in the tank. Note both of these rigs have the Revtek 3" lift kit installed as well.

We ran 3 passes, one with stock airfilter, one with the v8 running a K&N (just to see), and one with the drivers swapped.

I will type out all the details of our first (and fastest pass) and then give just 1/4 mile ET and MPH.

Pass 1: (our fastest)
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27

Pass 2: V8 with k&n, V6 Stock Air
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.863 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.978
86.11 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.17

Pass 3: Swapped Drivers
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.958 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.907
86.35 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.75

Well, there you have it. Talk amongst yourselves, speculate, etc (I know we have come up with every excuse in the book for why we were faster or not faster on certain parts of the track, hehe) - but the numbers don't lie, these two machines are EXTREMELY close.

Considering this is two different engines, two different transmissions and two different gear ratios, I'm simply amazed. We had a lot of fun and hope these numbers shed some light for both v6 and v8 drivers on what to expect from their rigs.

The best news in my mind is that our 4th gens rock! we run sub 16's STOCK and LIFTED!!! Woo hoo!!

Here's a post I can get onboard with. There's no way the V8 is a second faster than the V6 0-60 as "Burnin M" would have us believe. I don't how long it will take people to figure it out, but looking at peak torque figures by themselves proves absolutely nothing.

The numbers make sense, the V8 with more torque is quicker and the V6 with more HP was faster. As far as fast compared to other SUVs, the 4R is very fast. You can't compare it to a car, just like you can't compare a car to a motorcycle. Any car in the 15s is considered quick, now a truck is very quick.

well burnin m didnt believe me when i said I ran pretty much dead even with a v8 runner earlier in this thread...maybe now he'll realize i was telling the truth. :rolleye2:

Not that it matters to me either way (cmon guys its a truck...)but my buddy's brother has the v8 and I ran him from a stop light the other day and we were dead even at about 60 or so.

To be equal, was the V6 in 4WD or 2WD?

I don't drive to work a 1/4 mile at a time. The power and torque in the 1000-3000 rpm range is most important.

I'd like to know how the 2005 V6 with a 5-speed auto will differ. Probably faster?

The new VVTi V8 will have better top end power and times. I don't think a V6 will keep up anymore.

I've stood up both 6's and 8's on the brake off the line, and the V8 feels like it hits much harder initially. Must be once the first 2 gears are gone that the V6 picks up the ground.

Meh, even if they are even, I still would have picked the V8 for smoothness, sounds, AWD, off the line thurst, towing, fuel mileage (better than my 325i and my 3rd gen 4Runner) and that little badge on the front grill :D

Re: OK folks.. you asked for it.

Yes, and I responded to this post 6 months ago. Sure I believe your numbers, and they don't lie. In addition, both 4 Runners below you state are lifted. Certainly the modifications made to these vehicles could be affecting the performance compared to stock vehicles. In addition, several members on this board complained that their V8 4 Runners seemed sluggish, and slow, while many of us on the other hand notice that the acceleration of the V8 literally explodes off the line. SOOO, isn't it possible that your numbers are from a slow V8 4 Runner?

IT would certainly explain why every professional test out there show the V6 running to 60 in the mid to high 8 second range, while every test consistently shows the V8 in the mid to high 7 second range.

Lastly, as I've said before, and will say again, I'll be happy to race any V6 owner out there. We can even video tape it, and post it on the board! :D
