SR5 V6 0-60 time

Yes, and I responded to this post 6 months ago. Sure I believe your numbers, and they don't lie. In addition, both 4 Runners below you state are lifted. Certainly the modifications made to these vehicles could be affecting the performance compared to stock vehicles. In addition, several members on this board complained that their V8 4 Runners seemed sluggish, and slow, while many of us on the other hand notice that the acceleration of the V8 literally explodes off the line. SOOO, isn't it possible that your numbers are from a slow V8 4 Runner?

IT would certainly explain why every professional test out there show the V6 running to 60 in the mid to high 8 second range, while every test consistently shows the V8 in the mid to high 7 second range.

Lastly, as I've said before, and will say again, I'll be happy to race any V6 owner out there. We can even video tape it, and post it on the board! :D
That's one explanation. My V8 seemed to loosen up considerably from brand new, maybe some don't as much.

I've driven probably a dozen V8's and 6's of various packages back to back tho, and everytime the 8 feels faster. Maybe it's just an old case of sounds faster = feels faster. Or maybe the greater torque shove into the seat from like 1500rpm makes it seem faster than it is.....either way, the V8 always feels better. There ARE reasons why it costs more ;):

Sport edition

i think the hood scoop subtracts an extra second off my 1/4 mile time and takes and additional .5 sec off my 0-60 time...

im pretty happy with the V6... all it needs is an exhaust and intake...

Alrighty everyone, the results are in.

Today Doanlaw (04 v8 AWD Sport Edition) and Myself (04 SR5 4x4 v6) took our rigs to Carlsbad Raceway to run some laps and see just how different these two engine setups run under controlled conditions. I think you'll be suprised, we sure were!

First off we made sure everything on each rig was as close as possible. We removed our Spare tires, took out our SUB Boxes, took anything else out that wasn't bolted down and both ran with under 3-4 gallons of gas in the tank. Note both of these rigs have the Revtek 3" lift kit installed as well.

We ran 3 passes, one with stock airfilter, one with the v8 running a K&N (just to see), and one with the drivers swapped.

I will type out all the details of our first (and fastest pass) and then give just 1/4 mile ET and MPH.

Pass 1: (our fastest)
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

2.349 ---- 60ft ---- 2.271
6.605 ---- 330ft ---- 6.499
10.140 ---- 1/8 mile ET ---- 10.051
70.03 ---- 1/8 MPH ---- 68.82
15.832 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.836
86.48 ---- 1/4 mph ---- 85.27

Pass 2: V8 with k&n, V6 Stock Air
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.863 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.978
86.11 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.17

Pass 3: Swapped Drivers
'04 sr5 v6 4x4 ---- ' 04 SE V8 AWD

15.958 ---- 1/4 ET ---- 15.907
86.35 ---- 1/4 MPH ---- 85.75

Well, there you have it. Talk amongst yourselves, speculate, etc (I know we have come up with every excuse in the book for why we were faster or not faster on certain parts of the track, hehe) - but the numbers don't lie, these two machines are EXTREMELY close.

Considering this is two different engines, two different transmissions and two different gear ratios, I'm simply amazed. We had a lot of fun and hope these numbers shed some light for both v6 and v8 drivers on what to expect from their rigs.

The best news in my mind is that our 4th gens rock! we run sub 16's STOCK and LIFTED!!! Woo hoo!!

In this test the V8 had the upsized tires as well?? I think it was 265/70/17 vs stock for the V6. This will probably make a larger difference than the lifts itself.

To respond to somebody else on this thread, the V8s seem to perform much better after 10k miles and their fuel consumption improves quite a bit as well. Not sure what people with V6s are experiencing. ANyhow this is becoming irrelevant as the new v6 will have a 5 speed and the new V8 will have a higher revving engine.

yeah must have been yet another slow v8 4runner...like the one i raced. :sarcasm:

anyway, the lift kits cancel each other out since both the v6 and v8 were equipped with one in this test. you say 'in every test the v8 is much faster' but all you've pointed to are some numbers you found from a magazine (post the sources for these many 'professional' head to head tests please).... repeatable results are what should be used as a measuring stick. We keep hearing from people that from their experiences the trucks are dead even (myself included). i've driven the v8; it hardly 'explodes' off the line. it feels slightly more powerful off the line than the v6 but barely and the v6 feels more powerful in the higher rpms. the v8 is for pulling boats and sh1t not for racing. it wasn't put in there or marketed as 'faster' than the v6. sorry if you bought the v8 thinking it would tear up a v6 in a straight line but obviously that's just not the case.

I'll race ya if you feel like driving to Wilmington Delaware. If it means that much to ya that is. Bring your camera. I'm still in shock that as an m3 owner you are bothering to race an SUV. To be honest, from your earlier posts you strike me as a bit pretentious; which is why i am taking any time at all to counter your misguided statements.

Hey, just because you didn't want to pony up the extra $'s for the V8 (the only REAL reason anyone buys the 6) doesn't allow you to diss on the V8's :D

well if I a) don't own a boat b) don't want to spend 50$ every 5 days on gas c) don't want to spend an extra grand for an engine that won't move me any faster why would I spend the extra money? for the front end vibration you v8 guys complain about all the time?

i'm not dissing the v8...I just didn't see the need to buy one If I'm not towing something.

I hardly think that "the only REAL reaon anyone buys the 6" is because they "didn't want to pony up the extra $'s for the V8". Thats such a dumb assumption and we all should know what happens when you assume things... :p

Just like Loki said, who needs the V8 when you don't need to tow things? Gas mileage is better on the V6. I still have the same 4WD system as the V8 but I also have the OPTION to put it in 2WD (Something the V8 owners CAN'T do). Or I can keep it in 4WD so its Full Time just like the V8 owners have (big whooptie doo). The V6 is a very versatile configuration while the V8 has the extra grunt for towing.

So, everyone just be happy with what they have. Both engines are great and no need to bash on the other. We all drive 4Runners and they are great in whatever flavor you buy it.

yeah this is what it boils down to. i had a bad day. sorry for calling you pretentious burnin m...what can i say i'm a grumpy bastard today.

No sweat - I'm having a bad day too. Doesn't help when I'm talking trash, right? :p

Hope both our days get better!

Oh definetly.....hell, I'd take even a 4cyl 4Runner over a Jeep ;)

Nothing wrong with a little good natured ribbing tho :D

I bought the V8 because I felt it was worth the extra $. If the next guy doesn't feel the same, more power to him. That said, I drive the exact 'Runner as my V8, but a Limited white V6 at work everyday. The fuel economy comparision is basically nill (who cares really, if we wanted 50mpg, we'd all drive Echos); I'd never notice a 1mpg difference in my bankbook anyways (and there's not even that in my driving). My V8 gets better mileage than my old 3.4L V6, so I was happy enough with that. The AWD system kicks ass in the winter, and in 03 (when I got the thing) you also got an extra gear. The V6 sounds pretty ugly and feels rough under load IMHO.....probably my biggest beef with the 6. Resale on the 8's is better; bonus. I ended up buying a boat as well, so (as mentioned) the V8's better suited to towing.

BUT, if none of that matters to the next person, performance numbers are obviously damn close, and the V6 will save you some money at purchase.

Again, these are my opinions, and I promise that I've spent enough time with both engine configurations to be fairly accurate :)

One quick note and I promise I'm done. I have read magazine reports of the v8 running 15.8-9 1/4 mile times. Strange. That's what we ran. Doesn't sound like a "slow v8"

NO need to race on the streets in an uncontrolled enviornment. These times take "cutting a light" out of play --it starts when we break the light beam.

The V6 vs. V8 comparison is an age old argument that will never be settled. I know this much - If I owned a V8 I would NOT want to admit these are VERY close. Who would? And until some V6 stayed with me nose to nose in a controlled enviornment I would not accept anything to that regard.

To Burnin, and all of our V6 and V8 friends here on this board. It's simple, Just run it at your local track. Then we'll know. Then post your numbers. I did.

Funny - mine doesn't sound like that. Must be the "quiet V6".

Seriously - my post was not meant to be cheap shots. Please do not respond like it was.

In fact I have have never said anything bad about the V8.

Ok ok ok..... It just seems like many V6 owner's are trying to play off the V8 as a waste of money, and that's just not the case. I guarantee that most (hopefully all) V8 owner's drove a 6 cyl before they bought. They obviously felt that the V8 was better enough to be worth the price difference; I know I did, and continue to.

IMHO, upgrading to the V8 is the best money you can spend on a 2003 + 4Runner. If the 6 felt/drove/sounded/ran/towed the same as the 8, I would have bought it and kept the extra money in my jeans.....so would have everyone else that bought a V8 :) Other's opt for the V6; that's why they make both.

Of course there's nothing "wrong" with either one, like I said before, I'd take an old 4cyl 4Runner over a V8 Jeep ;):

The main reason behind my V8 was the full time 4WD. I know it may sound dumb, but I like to have my truck in 4WD all of the time, just a personal preference. I test drove both when I was buying and I have to say, I liked both a lot. If I had an older 4Runner, I would be just as happy. Personally, I thought the V8 felt stronger off the line and had a bit more pep when you hit the gas. Also, I think it sounds cool when you say "I have a V8":p It sounds impressive!!

PS: I think I may have one of the fastest V8's because of that cheap black cladding. It definitely sheds around .4-.5 seconds!!!;):

i agree with everything you said. i test drove both as well. i think the growl of the engine when the salesman told me to try putting my foot down during the test drive of the v8 sold me. i also liked the fact that it's the same engine as the $65k lexus lx470 and the gx, and the land cruiser, and the sequoia... all larger suvs with proven reliability. if i was concerned about gas price, i probably would've bought the v6.

it's funny that you guys are arguing over which is FASTER, when part of the reason i bought the v8 in 2003 was because it can go SLOWER. the 5 speed tranny actually has a shorter first gear ratio so it can crawl slower for offroading.

i don't see what the arguments are about, isn't it enough to be satisfied in knowing the fact you have an awesome truck, you want other people to feel bad about theirs?

Goes to show why they have both engines. I decided on the V6 for just the opposite reason -- that it could be part-time 4WD. If the V8 had the same drivetrain as the V6, I probably would have gone with it.

In any case, it would be very interesting to see a new set of timings with the new V6/5-speed drivetrain against the new V8 VVT-i.
