SR5 V6 0-60 time

Oh definetly.....hell, I'd take even a 4cyl 4Runner over a Jeep ;)

Nothing wrong with a little good natured ribbing tho :D

I bought the V8 because I felt it was worth the extra $. If the next guy doesn't feel the same, more power to him. That said, I drive the exact 'Runner as my V8, but a Limited white V6 at work everyday. The fuel economy comparision is basically nill (who cares really, if we wanted 50mpg, we'd all drive Echos); I'd never notice a 1mpg difference in my bankbook anyways (and there's not even that in my driving). My V8 gets better mileage than my old 3.4L V6, so I was happy enough with that. The AWD system kicks ass in the winter, and in 03 (when I got the thing) you also got an extra gear. The V6 sounds pretty ugly and feels rough under load IMHO.....probably my biggest beef with the 6. Resale on the 8's is better; bonus. I ended up buying a boat as well, so (as mentioned) the V8's better suited to towing.

BUT, if none of that matters to the next person, performance numbers are obviously damn close, and the V6 will save you some money at purchase.

Again, these are my opinions, and I promise that I've spent enough time with both engine configurations to be fairly accurate :)

Well I guess that settles it then! A completely unbiased opinion from northof49! :D

-loki, whos v6 doesn't sound anything like a bag of hammers thanks :)

I got the v8 for offroading, the 5 speed gearbox made 1st 18% or so shorter and topgear a bit longer so it had better spread especially low down. Also once you add a few hunderd pounds worth of bumpers, skids, sliders and upgrade to 33" tires you will need all the low down grunt you can get.

Once I'm done with all my upgrades I would like to take on a V6 with similar mods over a 1/4 mile :D

Come on now guys, to say that the people who bought V6s instead of V8s because they didn't want to spend the extra $$$ is not very true. Some may not need all that extra torque for towing, others may not need to lose an extra 2mpg if all they do is drive like grandma/grandpa, while others may never go off roading. That's like saying those who bought SR5s & Sports were too cheap to buy the Limiteds (except for the fact that Sports has X-reas and larger brakes).

Seriously, the price difference between a V6 & V8 is about $1200. I could've got the V8 considering that it was only about a week's pay $$$ for me, but I chose to get the V6 Ltd 4x4 since it had relatively equal (but less) power than the V8 and had the multi-mode 4wd system (why lose an extra 2mpg cruising 70-80mph on the freeway?). Now if Toyota had made an '05 VVTi V8 w/the multi-mode 4wd, I'd be trading in my 6 month old '04 for it. The only thing I'm waiting for and hoping that it will be made is a TRD supercharger for the 4.0 V6. The $1200 not spent is for the future supercharger & an upgraded kick-ass custom audio/video system.

Final comment: All the info on the track/test times posted on these various websites are full of B/S (most, but not all). I've gone to so many of these websites and they all basically sound the same. The reviews of the 4R on several websites (I won't mention which ones) seems as if one writer plagerized another writer's review. The 0-60 times posted weren't even actual results, but came from unreliable sources (i.e- 3rd party publications; where's the proof of actual tests?). They just take some info from some source and use it, the same way they use photos of the vehicle to post on the websites. Now if these 0-60 times were actually accurate & true, they would notate the source it came from (i.e- from a car magazine, test on a particular month/year). Basically, I'm saying that if the results didn't come from a car magazine publication who uses their own professional drivers, then the info is most likely inaccurate. The only true results I've seen in actual publication is Motor Trend's 7.8sec 0-60 time for the V8. Another thing about car mags, they won't test a vehicle or release actual test results on a vehicle if the auto manufacturer prohibit them from doing so. Point in case: MT tested both the new M5 vs the E55, but only posted the E55 results probably because the M5 (possibly pre-preduction model) track results weren't as impressive as the Bavarian automaker had hope. This may buy them some time to tuned the final production models to make them quicker. I have yet to see any car mag run a V6 in any test possibly due to Toyota's own test results for the pre-'05 model V6s & V8s which probably didn't show that the V8 was a whole lot faster than the V6. Toyota may have barred the car mags from testing a V6 until the '05 VVTi V8s came out so that the consumer who buys an '05 V8 knows that he/she bought a more superior engine (Obviously the '05 V8 will whoop both the 4.0 V6s & pre '05 V8s).

IMO, the V6 is plenty powerful for regular driving on flat roads. I pass up cars on freeways as if they were Yugos & Metros. I must admit that there are times (weekly) that I could've use a little more omph and an extra gear & that is when I wanna do 85mph+ up the cajon pass (I-15 mountain pass) and when I wanna gun it from 80-100mph+ to shut up the occasional disrespectful racer.

If anyone has any REAL 0-60 test results other than some B/S website whose main goal is to list the features of various vehicles to help the new car buyer decide which make/model to purchase, I'd really like to see it! (((other than the actual test results from SD4RUNNER, which IMO is seems pretty accurate & reputable))).

I fully agree buddy - I think you would see the v8 pulling away quite a bit more! :) Torque moves weight :)

I think with both engines we are spoiled, now with the 05s guys are getting more spoiled.

I know it doesn't, but it's not as smooth feeling/sounding as the 4.7

That was a litte jab back for the earlier "how's that front end vibration," or "how's putting $50 gas in every 2 days" type comments. Just showing that it's possible to turn things around if we want to get into exagerations ;):

Exactly, different strokes, that's why they make 2 motors. OT: Limited has X-Reas, at least Canadian ones do.

gearing on V6 vs v8

Got this from this site:
http://www.new-cars.com/2004/toyota/toyota-4runner-specs.html

First set is V6, 2nd set is V8
Gear ratios ( :1)
1st 2.804 3.520
2nd 1.531 2.042
3rd 1.000 1.400
4th 0.705 1.000
5th - 0.716
Reverse 2.393 3.224

Note that the 4th gear is actually longer than the the 5th gear on the V8. Look at the HUGE difference between the 1st gears though... No wonder the V8 has so much grunt off the line.

If I am calculating the final drive ratios correctly, the V6 would have a final drive ratio of 10.961:1 in first gear where the V8 has 13.119:1 (stump pulling power). Top speed final drive ratios for V6 and V8 are as follows: 2.756:1 V6 and 2.668:1 V8, so on the highway, this may help the gas mileage a little bit...

XREAS is optional on the Limited here in the US. Maybe it may come bundled in with most Limiteds in Canada...?
Our Limiteds only come 2 ways: V6 or V8 (or with the 3rd row package in 2004). Other than that, all of the options are included and the only things you can add are accessories. We are much more limited (pun not intended hehe) than the US in the fashion. Basically, there are only 3 ways you can get your V6 or V8 4Runner: SRS, SR5 Sport, and Limited. No picking of options; what's in the package is what you get

For example, all Canadian Limiteds come standard with X-REAS, rear adjustable air susp, Homelink, JBL 6 pack/10 speaker, rear seat audio, etc, etc....whether you want it or not :p

you forgot to take into account the transfer case ratio of 2.566 in lo which is the same for both engines. your numbers are for the transfer case in hi. if you take into account the lo gear the final drive of the v8 is roughly 33:1 and the v6 is 28:1. a big factor in my choosing the v8. i recently read in 4wheeler mag. that anything over 30:1 to them is good crawling ratio. a lot of suvs on the road doesn't come close to those ratios.

transmission x differential x transfer case = overall drive ratio

____V6____V8

Gear ratios ( :1)
1st 2.804 3.520

Reverse 2.393 3.224
Differential 3.909 3.727

Transfer Case High: 1.000
Low: 2.566

what's the point, he lives in Canada. other than lakes, the only destination worth traveling to is easy to get to. just drive due south and over the border.

You guys are all off on this one...

The V8 4 Runner does 0-60 anywhere from 7.6 to 7.9, depending on the testers, vehicles, conditions...

The V6 4 Runner does it in the high 8's, somewhere around 8.6, I believe.

Any of you 4.0 V6 owners wanna race me, let me know ;-)

I'm in San Jose...

This sounds fun
