Not sure why Toby was so salty in the last few posts being I was standing next to him at KOH2020 while he decided to rant on here. Typical Toby exaggerating alittle, the truck is not cut-up into pieces like you guys are thinking. The only thing cut out is the flooring under the seats since the seat mounts need to be redone/lowered and the front core support so I could pull the engine.
Anyways, I’m building the truck the way I want to now and I’m completely fine with that meaning it doesn’t race for another year.
After KOH2019 I got the truck fixed up and used it at ATR2019 and with some local buddies a couple times. After those trips, I started making a list of everything the truck needed and it wasn’t short.
After further inspection all of the engine and transmission mounts were either bent and/or cracked. Whether this was from previous owners of the truck or during racing, who knows. The mounts were so destroyed that the front diff has actually dented in the oil pan of the engine and the transfer case was rotating up and hitting the bottom of the floor. This is definitely why Connor and I were having trouble keeping the truck in gear during KOH2019.
The rear shock mounts also had to go, being we wanted to run 14s, Connor did everything he could to make them fit well but he couldn’t fix the fact they were going to have to hang low. After using the truck some, I’d find myself slamming right into those mounts (we all knew that would be the case) so I decided it was time to change up the rear setup. The only way to do that would be run small shocks or go through the body. Going through the body would mean I’d have to move up to 4500 class.
We all know that the truck was rushed for KOH2019 and Connor built the best truck he could in the backyard of his rental house with the timeline we had. Super grateful for all the work everyone put into the truck and wish it would have done better during the race. But in the end, the truck needs a lot of work and I’d like to build it how I’ve always envisioned it.
Anyways, I’ve started wrenching on the truck some recently when I’ve had time at night. Running SRQ and TNF means long hours, 6-7 days a week right now so not much time is left for wrenching.
What I know, 4500 class, 6.0 LS, Holley EFI system, tube chassis front end, full width rear axle, bypasses all around.
I have no timeline for the build besides work on it when I have the time. Last time we attempted to build the truck for a specific date and well, it kinda worked lol.
The stock drivetrain is all pulled, interior stripped down, and remainder of stock wiring ripped out. If I have time this weekend I hope to cut off the front inner fenders and maybe start mocking up some tube layouts.
Some photos for you guys:
Here’s a photo of my Fj40 project that is borrowing the PRPs from the 4Runner for the time being.
