SRQ Fabrications Ultra4 4600 3rd Gen Build

My fascination for building an Ultra4 truck all began in February of last year when I was lucky enough to be apart of snivilous LC80 4500 team at KOH2018. On my flight home to Tampa, FL, all I could think about was having my own truck to bring out the following year. While I knew it wasn't going to be an easy task, I set out to make it happen.

This thread is going to follow the process of making that dream a reality.

Goal:
Race and complete KOH2019

Build Specs:
99 Toyota 4runner 3.4L 4x4 Automatic
Stock Drivetrain (per 4600 rules)
35" Tires
17" Beadlock Wheels
ARB locked front and rear
Custom IFS 3.5" LT (Built by 4Running Daily) utilizing 8" 2.5 ADS Coilovers
4-link rear suspension utilizing 14" ADS 2.5 Shocks
Diamond Rear axle
Plastic Guy Bumpstops
Full DOM 2" Cage
PRP Competition Seats
PCI Communications and Air
32 JAZ Gallon Fuel Cell
Completely stripped interior

There is going to be a lot more to this build but hopefully, that gives you an idea of what is to come.

While I wish I had the time and skills to build this truck from the ground up myself, I don't. Over the past couple of months snivilous, 4Running Daily, and I have been planning this build and making sure we can make it a reality in a timely manner.

After searching CL and Fb groups looking for a good candidate for the build, we found this gem! Following his return from San Diego, Connor went and picked up the truck in Pheonix to begin the build. While the truck did get hit in the front, the rest of the truck is spotless and perfect for an Ultra4 build.

Over the past week we have been busy ordering parts to fix the damaged (radiator, fan, air box) front end. We have also begun ordering suspension components (uniballs, rod ends, ballistic joints, shocks, etc.) and safety equipment (Seats, harnesses, etc).

Here is a rendering of the PRP seats on the way

Connor is hoping to have the truck up and running this week so he can begin to tear down the interior and stock suspension. With that being said, stay on the lookout for some mint interior pieces hitting the marketplace!

Working on teaching Connor on how to take horizontal photos :director:

Sub'd!!

Is it too soon to call dibs on the little covers for the seat bolts on the floor and the clear plastic piece that goes over the tac/speedo?

Before everyone starts commenting and suggesting things, remember this is a STOCK CLASS build. The stock class has the most rules and restrictions. Here is a very brief summary of what the truck must conform to:

-35s max
-no substantial body modifications (ie no cutting inner fender, no cutting of inside of the main body, etc.)
-stock style suspension, so a single coilover up front and a single non-bypass shock with a separate spring in the rear (shocks themselves have limitations too)
-no hydraulic (air) bumpstops
-working doors and hatches
-has to be a factory engine/powerplant, so no supercharger or v8 swap

All suggestions and ideas and thoughts are welcome, but keep in mind certain things are done certain ways for certain reasons that are specific to the rules. Matt's daily driver has LT and bypasses, meaning right off the bat this truck will have (arguably) an inferior suspension to his daily. Food for thought before people start suggesting running 40s and SAS it and a v8, etc.

That looks like a fun project! I’m confused why if the 4600 class requires stock rear geometry that they would allow you to bolt on a long travel front kit that completely changes the front end stock geometry. Is it that the front is A arm from the factory and the arms can be modified as long as the OEM mounting points are untouched? So basically not allowed to SAS or convert to TTB? Either way, it will be fun watching this thing progress. I like watching ifs rigs mix it up with the conventional SFA rigs in these races!

Stock style, ex. if it's leafs it has to stay on leafs, linked with coilovers has to stay that way, linked with a coil bucket has to stay that way, etc. IIRC there is a wheel base requirement of +/- 3" of stock, but LT and a triangulated 4 link in the back would be perfectly fine. Stock rear links and rear coilovers though, would not be--so mounting points can be anything as long as the wheel base requirement is met, and as long as the suspension and spring and shock setup remains the same rough concept as stock it's fine. I don't know how TTB would fit into the rules, I assume even though it's IFS it needs to stay A-arms like the stock type IFS but I'm not entirely sure (though regardless that doesn't affect us).

Stock style

Who's the judge that decides whether or not this rig meets the criteria? It seems like there's a bit of leeway on what exactly "stock style' could mean. For instance, could you increase the diameter of the rear single stage shock? A triangulated 4link with 3.0 shocks isn't what my rig came with but it still falls into the general concept of the stock rear.

I guess what I'm getting at here is get to know the judges. Buy them some likes on Facefarse and some beers in person and you have a pretty good shot of getting more leeway. It's not what you know it's who you know. lol

Well there's more restrictions than that haha. So shocks are universally limited in 4600 to 2.5" pistons and 14" stroke and no bypasses. If the suspension is linked on coils it has to stay linked, so they just want the suspension to be of the same general attachment and spring and shock setup as stock. So could you run a quarter elliptical if your rig came with normal leafs? Seems like it, and I know in the past for some SCORE classes people did that because it had advantages over a normal semi-elliptical setup.

But you are completely right otherwise, there are lots of gray areas in the rules and a lot of areas that shouldn't be gray but are gray. There's a tech guy you can reach out to if you need something specific, but honestly the actual build rules aren't even checked. Safety is checked at tech, but no one ever goes through and says "Oh this is a 4600 car and has full hydro and bypasses, that's not right". There is a red card system in Ultra4 where you can call out another driver after a race, though you have to pay a fee to do that and not waste Ultra4s time, but essentially since the smaller classes aren't the main focus (the 4400 unlimiteds are), the drivers have to police each other. There have been plenty of instances of people not following the rules, but if they don't beat you then who really cares is the consensus I usually see.

So there's rules, they're pretty gray, you can ask about them or not, and then if you're illegal there's a very good chance no one will even sweat it unless that modification actually gives you an advantage. It's confusing, and actually one of the big reasons I personally bumped to 4500 (mod class) when I originally was gonna do 4600 since there's so many weird rules and restrictions that I didn't want to navigate around.

Are any mods allowed at all to the engine?

Curious how many miles are on the engine and what you plan to do to get it ready for that type of race.

Yes, you can actually do a lot to the engine but it has to originally be an OEM block and then no boost. So intake, tune, big bore, stroker, etc. are all perfectly fine--but putting a TRD supercharger is not....

Sitting at 247k. Right now the plan is to just conduct normal maintenance on the engine (fluids, filters, etc.) unless we find something pressing.

Subscribed! Glad to have another IFS Toyota competing in 4600! Should finish all my 4th gen v8 engine mods today - then it's on to Phase II!

Looking forward to seeing you on the lakebed - us Toyota guys have to stick together!

sub'd for 4runner pron. Can't wait to see how this all turns out. Told 4Running Daily I'd be more than glad to help you guys out in the pits or wrenching once you're back in California.
