So I decided to add a ladder to the rear bumper. It will extend at the top and rest on the roof rack for support when used.

What software are you using to design this? I have solid works, but I don't think I have the know how to do anything that awesome!

It's google sketchup for the looks of it. Free software!

I'd love to show you more but all it is a design now. I wish I had the money, time, and welding skills to make it right now.:moping:
I'm using sketchup and yes its free. I wish I had solid works, it works better for me.

How did you learn to do that? I have taken classes to teach me solidworks and I still can't make the design be real. I can rough it out on paper but they never come out on the computer well. Let alone try to have someone build it.

I took a class my freshman year of highschool, then one day when I was bored in college I downloaded sketchup and taught myself how to use it with the background from highschool. It might also help that I have a desire to be an engineer or an architect and have a taste for this kind of stuff.

Man, making me feel bad and I am going into the engineering field. It may not help me that I am not as computer savvy as most of my friends. I like to build things so I can touch it it and tweak it. I am not a drafter haha.

I think I am going to get back on solid works and try to start laying out my ideal rear bumper design. Thanks for the motivation.
Do you happen to have the basic frame dimensions and any other necessary or helpful dimensions on hand? I would get funny looks if I go measure my car in the parking lot of the office. lol

To be honest I don't haha I just eyeballed it. In my earlier post I said that I would design it on the CAD then I would build it out of cardboard and tweak it in the necessary fashion to make it work. My front bumper was off be .5 inches. I do know that my widest point is 74" or 76".

I have a request. Can I ask you to measure me some dimension for the front frame rails? Im trying to sketch up some bumper plans for myself, and would appreciate it greatly.
I need overall width of frame rails, width of each frame rail, and heighth as well. I would also appreciate distance from the front of the two frame rails, to the radiator, and distance from the front of each frame rail to the body mount.
I want to start it off as a winch mount/front cross member, but I want to tuck the winch in as close as possible to the radiator, and see if I can build in an integrated but removable front and under diff/oil sump skid plate.
Id really appreciate it, man.

Thats a lot of measurements. I have a few of those measurements though. Next time I take off the bumper I can give you some more. You should know that I plan to cut the ends off of my rails and weld on a plate to fill the hole. If you want measurements for the stock rail set up I can get those for you too, when I take my bumper off. However of what I do know, the frame rails from from edge to edge is 2' 8" across. I think that each frame rail is 3" tall and 1.5"-2" wide but im not 100% sure on that one.

Got a chance to work with Solidworks and made my first attempted at recreating my front bumper, and I think it turned out pretty good for for the fact that I just started yesterday.

On the back side the frame is going to be boxed into the bumper and held on with grade 8 bolts on the top and sides.

So there has been a plot twist to this whole build. My buddy got some free steel from his work and said he would like to practice his welding since he is in welding school. Well we started out just welding things together when he said lets try and build a bumper. This was supposed to be just a practice but it turned out to work really well and I think I'm going to actually keep it for now. It still has a lot of work to be done to it but for just being the base project it turned out a lot better than expected for the fact that we didn't really have all of the best tools and parts. However, who can beat free metal. So far in this bumper build i'm about $50 deep.
