Stalling when opening gas cap

99 SR5 V6 4WD - 163k. Did some searching before posting couldn't find anything.

Weird issue happened today. I was getting gas and normally I always turn my truck off. For some reason today i decided to leave it running when stopped for gas. So put the truck in park.

As soon as the attendant opens the gas cap (NJ) the truck stalls out. After he is done filling and replaces the cap I go to start the truck and it hesitates to start. (which it sometimes does if i turn it off and start it up without a few minutes of cool down)

I finally get it to start after a few turns and giving it a little gas which I know isn't the ideal way to do things.

Any ideas? I have not changed the fuel filter. EVAP maybe?

Its not throwing any codes or check engine lights. It has been running normally aside from the starting issue when warm. I've only had the truck for around 3k miles and have just been doing the normal maintenance. Timing belt/WP/tensioner/fan belts/oil/trans/diffs/ and the mechanic also replaced my crank position sensor he said was bad.

Definitely start with the fuel filter. The EVAP system is much lower pressure than the fuel line, definitely didn't know it could cause the truck to stall. EVAPs fail by leaking, not by building up too much pressure.

The Evap system uses engine vacuum to suck the gas vapor from the tank. I've seen a stuck open evap purge valve cause a hard start after fueling.

The stalling is weird. If the purge valve is stuck open it would put excessive vapor and air rushing into the engine when you open the cap possibly causing it to stall. Hard start because to much fuel vapor and not enough air to cause truck to run. I'd start there. Possible mixed up vacuum lines

Why would the attendant let you leave the engine on while fueling? That seems a bit crazy to me... (aside from the fact that any newer car will immediately throw a code if you do that)

It does sound like opening the fuel filler confused something with the evap system.

Is it running normally otherwise now?

I've been meaning to order a fuel filter for a while so I'm going to do that - and a new gas cap.

The attendants do not care either way. I see a lot of people leaving their cars on.

And its not so much a "hard" start when its warm, it seems to not want to start without a little gas.

With that and the stalling I was thinking those two problems are joined.

Will report back after filter change.

I think the saddest part of this post is that I knew you were located in NJ just by the mention of 'gas station attendant'... even before your little 'NJ'

Hah! I knew someone would bring it up

Its so dumb. Its against the law to pump your own gas in NJ.

It used to be some stations that wouldn't care but now they all need the "attendant access card" swiped before the pump will turn on.

I guess it keeps people working.

I guess it's ok as long as the price of the gas doesn't increase exponentially to cover their paychecks...
