My 94 starts on first turnover in the morning and is strong but after I have driven for a while and parked, it is hard to crank and I get a smell of gas. can someone give me ideas before I take it to a mechanic. I would like to be able to talk about my ideas with them or else I will be taken to the cleaners when they see that I know very little about it. Thank You Kindly for any help it is so appreciated.

Engine Coolant Sensor
Just went through this same issue with a Ford Explorer 94. The vehicle would always start fine, but after driving it for a few minutes... usually after 10 minutes, if I were to turn it off, then it would be very difficult to start. I also would have a gass (flooding) smell. Well, after tons of research, it lead me to what I thought would be a off the wall fix. This fix was the engine coolant temp sensor.
No way would I think this could cause the problem. But apparently, the ECU uses this temp to determine whether the engine is in a "cold" start condition. So if the engine is actually warm, but the CPU thinks that it is cold, then it floods the engine with fuel in attempt to perform a cold start!
I replaced this sensor and the problem was gone! Other symptoms were erratic idling. Sometimes the engine would just rev up for no reason. I had replaced several things including the o2 sensor but no luck. Ended up being a 15 dollar part.
Not sure if this is the same issue with yours...but thought I would share my experience with you. Good luck.

Thank you so much. It is hard not to know something when talking to the mechanic, you know what they can do to you. I think they just start a process of elimination sometimes.
My 4 runner has no skip at all and runs very very smooth when idling. I hope your suggestion is what it takes.
