starter contact repair kit - kilowatt?

Old 4runner owner but new forum member... I am going to replace the starter contacts on my 4runner during Thanksgiving break, but the dealer says there are two types of contacts -- one for the 1.4 kw starter and one for the 1.8 kw starter. Is there any way to know without looking at the starter itself which one I need? (Car is at home, I am at work, and I need to order today so I can pick up the contracts tomorrow.) I have a 1997 Limited, though I don't know off hand what the actual production date is. Worst case, I'll order both ($25 for each kit), though the dealer is reluctant to let me return the one I don't use.

None of the forum postings I found for starter contact replacement talked about having to choose the correct starter kit type, so this was not anticipated...

look at the vin number on the insurance card or insurance website and tell the dealer to look it up for u ...

yeah, I gave them the VIN (last 8 digits at least) and that's what prompted the two different types. Something tells me only a visual inspection of the starter will answer this question....

Sounds like a dealer I wouldn't be doing business with to be honest. I got mine at O'Reilly. It was the wrong one but they had no problem exchanging it for the correct set.

I believe that the 1.4 is for a standard transmission and the 1.8 is for the automatic. Don't quote me, but I'm almost 100%! Any good parts store should have that info.

Seems right, consistent with what I learned. I checked the sticker on my starter, its part no 28100-62030, dealer looked it up, it's a 1.8 kilowatt, and I have an automatic. Hopefully it gets here by Friday, I actually have time this weekend!

Yeah, I have the manual and starter Pn# 28100-62050 which is the 1.4Kw. You can also get the big starter with the cold weather package, heated mirrors, seats, etc. even if manual. All extended cab Tacomas get the big one, too.

I'm sure a cold TC adds a lot of drag; my manual with the 1.4Kw cranks great even at 10°F, which is the coldest it has seen.
