Hi everyone thanks for your help I'm new to this forum so please take it easy on me. My Toyota 4runner 1998 is starting to not start at times. It just goes click 1 time and won't start. After a while it starts. Just 1 click.....click. and they said it wor and they said it work fine. But on my Camry when my alternator went and it seems Tokyo to par and it seems Toy parts break intermittently not just totally immediately. I found a thread on this forum talking about starter Contacts. My questions are does this sound like the starter is bad in my 4runner. Are also the contacts part of starter and if so why not just replace the whole starter and not mess around with just replacing the contacts as they're fairly expensive anyways.

Yeah, sounds like your starter is bad. The reason people only replace the contacts is because they are $8.00 compared to buying a new starter which is $140 minimum.

I think the contacts cost me about $10 or less. I bought them and a $30 used Denso starter from ebay to put them in. Since I didn't want to reuse the aftermarket starter that had the bad contacts, which is what yours has.

Have you ever pulled the starter? Don't do like some and cut the inner fender out. There is a pretty good write-up on changing a starter here, but it does not mention how to actually get it out. Once you have all the bolts out, move the starter towards the front of the vehicle, and lift that end slightly, and toward the motor as the pinion comes out. The pinion end must drop first, and it will fall right to the ground. Keep note of it's orientation as it comes out. It will only go in the reverse of the same way it came out... unless you want to take apart more stuff or cut the inner fender. Took me longer to do the contacts than to change the starter.
