I have a 99 4runner with a 3.4 V6, (limited) I was wondering how do you know which size of starter you have? I was given the option of a 1.4kw or a 1.8kw. Just want to know which one top order!!! Thanks in advance.

don't know for sure but if it will fit there is nothing wrong with going to the bigger one it will be easier on your engine as it has a higher tq of about 2 hp's
which is good on your engine but will draw a little more battery to start, in true off road formats they use a 2.5 or more starter so when you stall on steep inclines you can just turn the key without having to pres the clutch in and start rolling back. kind of like these... http://www.quadratec.com/products/55111_100.htm
so pick your battle, do you want one that will start with smaller amperage? or do you want one that will have higher tq and get you runing smoother easier?
thinking about it now, the stock one is probably 1.4 and everything i said above doesn't matter but if that's not the case and they say stock is 1.4 but a 1.8 will work re-read above and make your choice, lol.
The 1.8kw is for the automatic, you can take it out by coming out the right wheel well. Separate auto dipstick tube, remove 2 brackets holding brake lines, move brake lines out of way (no need to disconnect) and remove starter by carefully wiggling it out, it does come!
Yeah, the contacts were beat, but instead of replacing the contacts I replaced the whole starter because I really dont want to take it out again anytime soon. If the contacts are beat after this amount of time, why not replace the entire thing and not have to worry about it.
