Starting issues, next steps help.

Problem: When I turn the key in the ignition I hear a click and that is it.

After searching and watching a number of videos I have tried the following:

Replaced the contacts in the starter, plunger is good just cleaned up the contacting surface. I replaced the starter relay as I could get the starter to spin by jumping the 5 and 3 terminals. The new relay did not help so tested the old and new one for resistance and operation and both are fine.

I checked every fuse in the car and in the black box under the hood, all are good. I have also cleaned the battery terminals and all grounding cable connections.

I used a multi-meter and confirmed 12.66 volts (12.67 at the battery) on terminals 3 & 5 and I am getting 17.xx volts on terminals 1 and 2.

With the key on I can start the truck by jumping the 3 and 5 terminals.

I get lights and buzzer with the key in the ignition and the lights (clock) dim when I try to start it so there is definitely a draw to the starter.

I checked for any loose cables under the dash / kickpanel with no luck. The only thing I can think of is I didn't reinstall the security ECU that was under the drivers seat when I replaced the carpet, could this be it?

Wanted to check here to see what else it might be or other things I can check.

Thanks in advance.

How many miles in your truck?
Did you get the correct starter contact? there are two kinds (the curved one and not the square contact).
Keep the truck in park mode with park brake applied. Disconnect the solenoid wire plug and attach a new wire to the solenoid wire pin on the starter. Now try to start with that attached wire. It should get a positive 12V directly from the battery.

I think the plunger is not pushing enough to engage the starter wheel into the flex plate

I bet its the security ECU. Mine has the Starter Disable to prevent theft. It looks like you covered all of the other bases.

Yeah Scramble, this is what I was thinking. I will install it in when I back at the house next weekend and follow up.

NissanH, appreciate the response. The contacts were indeed the same shape and I confirmed good contact with the plunger before re-installing it. I think the rest is all covered tho as I can start the truck with the ignition on and jumping the 3 and 5 terminal where the start relay plugs in. If installing the security ECU doesn't fix it I will see about next steps.
