I have a 1997 4runner 4wd automatic transmission w/ 6 cyl. Sometimes when attempting to crank the starter does not turn-over and when it does start I noticed the starter motor does not want to stop/disengage. Anyone had this problem and know what needs to be done to correct, starter, solenoid, etc....

If this is the original starter, then I would replace it. They do not last forever. For some reason the return spring it not returning the starter gear after the solenoid is de-energized or the solenoid is staying energized some reason after the ignition key is returned to the run position.
its your key interlock switch, its just under the igition behind the
panel at your legs, a little box (I thinks its white on the bottom W/ wires) .
Happens to mine on a long trip .
once I found this out, I would just tap box or move wires and it will start.
took me alot of talking to techs (I happen to work around the dealerships)
I will get the part # for you ,its in my truck .
