The original starter in our 1990(about 100k) had been giving indications of impending failure, so replacement was needed. After some investigations into aftermarket sources (web, dealer, local parts store, etc), the dealer reman unit seemed the better way to go. Part # for the reman unit is:
1) 28100-65030-84 , $175.81 (before taxes)
The core charge was $30, but was immediately refunded as I already pulled the starter. It's a tight fit in the passenger fender well, and you'll need to unbolt the access panel in there. Some of the plastic push clips that hold the mud flap might break. Don't worry, as universals are available for about $.15 a piece. With this job, it helps to have an assortment of 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive extension pieces. You can get access from the pass fender well, underneath, and from the front with the metal pan dropped. It helps to remove the heat shield on the header, so spray whatever on it beforehand. I used a map gas torch, then used copper antiseize on the hardware. Having pulled the starter once before to do the motor mounts, this made the shield removal relatively simple. It was a challenge the first time and makes the job much easier when, or after removal. Hope this helps others.
