starter wouldnt quit running

this morning i jumped in my 4runner, turned the key to start the engine and the starter wouldnt quit! i twisted the key back and forth several times and the starter wouldnt shut off! i put the tranny in nuetral, (manual) popped the hood and was scrambling to find a wrench to disconnect the battery and just as i got to the battery with a wrench, it stopped. it scared the hell out of me, mostly because it was surprising.

i'm guessing a stuck starter solenoid--it doesnt look like new starters are available anymore what would my best replacement be? i would appreciate suggestions--thankyou

Sounds like a sticking plunger to me. Denso 280-0167 would be the direct replacement (1.4kw) but you can also use Denso 280-0166 (1.8kw). The Denso 280-0166 is larger dimensionally. You could also rebuild your current starter.

do you think rebuilding the original one is better than buying another one?

I'll second [MENTION=319302]Bad Luck[/MENTION]'s thoughts Contacts welded together.

New Plunger and contact kit would be first thought as long as starter wasn't making odd noises acting normal.
Got almost 400k mi doing this twice bearings never changed, died in a crash.

Seconded. And by 'rebuild' we mean new contacts and plunger. It is quite easy.

The first time my starter failed it stuck on like this. Most recent failure (around 300k miles) was long wait before engagement of the starter or multiple tries to get the starter to engage.

wow, thanks for the input! my starter is original and the reason i asked is i've heard the ones from autozone arent too good. yotashop.com makes a point of theirs being rebuilt by denso too original factory specs and i thought it might be better.
 
Same thing happened to me. The plunger got stuck against the copper contacts. Rebuild the solenoid with new contacts and plunger and carry on.

I've got a video for the job.
