starter

My truck has a Bosch starter. 108,000 miles. It is a little slow to start, or cranks a little too long, depending on perspective I guess.

I reckon slow to start may be fuel and not starter?

Anyway, I was thinking of getting a starter from the pick and pull, change the contacts, and have it ready for when the Bosch dies. When I look at Toyota of Dallas they list 2 starters and the only difference I see is that one is 1.4KW and one is 1.8KW.

Will any 3rd gen starter work on any 3rd gen truck?

I believe one is for the auto, and one is for the 5speed... Could be wrong though. A little searching for starter issues should clear it up... I'd recommend a used denso starter, and rebuild the starter contacts... Easy with the starter on a bench.. Search the starter contact replacement threads. Good luck.

My '96 is a 3.4 with auto and has a 1.8kw starter. But, I'm unsure why you think the starter is the problem. If it cranks the engine at what sounds like it's slower than the normal rate it could be the starter but more likely is the battery and/or corroded battery cable connections. If the starter cranks the engine at what sounds like a normal rate but the engine is slow to fire up, it likely is an ignition or fuel injection system problem.

I believe the 1.8 was on the cold weather specd trucks, but the 2000 Limited has the 1.8 So idk how true that is.

I replaced both my contacts and the plunger last year. The parts guy at Toyota dealer I went to told me that if I didn't know what starter I had it was no problem and the to just get the contacts for the 1.8. Being that the housing was the same, the only difference was the surface area of the contacts inside. Either way when I went to replace the parts they matched up perfectly with the old ones so I'm leaning toward the 1.8 for my rig which is a 5-speed from Colorado. On the window sticker it did have the cold weather package.

Yep, the slow crank is probably not the starter. Battery is only 6 months old. Could be the cables, I am going to check them and maybe replace them. But, the slow crank got me thinking about the starter and since tomorrow is 1/2 off at the pick in pull I figured I would look for an OEM one to have for back up.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

Well, it certainly could be the starter so if the battery and cables are okay that's the logical next step. In my previous post I didn't understand whether it was cranking slowly or was taking a long time to fire up. Probably be a good idea to put new contacts and plunger in the used OEM starter. As far as I can tell that's the only thing that wears out on 'em.

Me Too

I've also got a Bosch starter, -curse the mechanic who put it on there for the PO.

I suspect it's causing mine to crank a little slow too. Maybe undersized or just crap. Cables have been replaced and Batts new.

When I find a Toyota OEM I am going to grab it and rebuild it for a spare.

MandAtaco replaced his recently. He had a spare that was already rebuilt which had a shorter motor housing than the one that came out of his '00 Limited which we assumed was the 1.8 and the spare he acquired was a 1.4. They were identical in every way except the motor housing was longer on what we believed was the 1.8.

That's good to know, I'm curious if the contacts can still be interchangeable even though the housing is a different size? Like I mentioned before, I had no clue what starter I had, I was kinda buying stuff all at once and got the parts for the starter not knowing what one I had. Luckily for me they where the same ones so with nothing to compare them to I wouldn't know.

To be honest, the parts guy telling me they would work either way, well, it wouldn't be the first time they blew smoke up my ass. The other time telling me it would be a waste installing 231mm.
