Hey guys new to the forum! I purchased a 2000 Runner V-6 Auto. 60K miles. I had the starter replaced about a month ago. About a week after when I go to start it there is a grinding noise. I let off the ignition and try it again. It starts fine. Within the day the truck starts fine unless I leave it overnight or when I go start it after work. This morning I pulled it out of my garage after it grinded then started, I turned it off, tried it again and it started perfectly. Im confused. I talked to my mechanic that installed the starter and he said he could put in a new starter but he seems cofused because it isnt consistant. He mentioned flywheel. This never happened until the new starter was put in. Is there some sort of alignment relationship with the starter and the flywheel? Im really confused.

If he mentioned flywheel, he's probably worried that the teeth on the flywheel are stripped. This could happen over time from too much "double starting." Or, like you say, maybe the starter isn't lining up right.
Before worrying about that tho, was the replacment starter a new or used part?

sounds like a bad starter
It may be that the throwout bearing on the starter for the starter gear to engage the flywheel may be sticking. I had a Mustang do this to me. See if they will replace the starter, when they do, they can examine both the flywheel and the starter gear for wear. This would present itself after sitting for a while, especially in cold weather.
