Starting issue

I have a 1995 4Runner and have recently run into a problem of starting my vehicle. I put the key into the ignition and in the "on" position everything works fine. When I turn the key to start, everything dies. I was reading some other threads about how some people had their 4Runners die for good, but when I put the key back into the on position everything is fine again. Nothing is clicking repeatedly like it's a dead battery; it simply clicks once and that's it. But nevertheless I took it to Les Schwab and they told me the battery and connections are fine. Sometimes I'll have to turn it once or twice in order for it to start, sometimes it'll take 20 or 30 times of just sitting there and turning the key. And other times it'll start on the first try. My gut feeling would be the starter, but should I take it to a mechanic to diagnose it or just get the starter replaced? Any estimates on how much this should cost? Thanks

I've had the same problem with mine and then it wouldn't start at all. I just replaced the starter today and it worked for about 5 starts then I'm having the same problem. Make sure you check all your fuses you might have blown one. that helped me with the everything turning off part. and if you do take it in please let me know what they say. Thanks

Starter contacts inside the starter. You don't need a complete new starter. Runs about 30 bucks from the dealer.

Thanks every one for your help and as a few of you said it was the starter contacts. But I couldn't buy any new ones for some stupid new law. So I bought a rebuilt one and the thing works great
