Starting issue

Question for all of the Toyota mechanics! I have a 2000 4Runner Sport. Sometimes, when trying to start, the motor stops turning over. Not like the battery going dead. (that would give a clicking sound and dim the lights) It literally just stops turning over. I have to rotate the ignition back to the off position and then back on again. I have had to do this on several occasions and now it is getting very annoying.

If I had to guess, I would say that it is something to do with the factory installed alarm.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! You can email me direct at [email protected].

Thanks,

Stephen

do you have any other key fobs with transducers in them on your key ring? The manual says this can interfere with starting your vehicle.

T4R 04 V6 Limited slow start

Hello t4runners,

Has anyone dealt with a slow start after the car has been parked for 3-4 hours.
Once it starts, runs like a horse and no symptoms of any kind.

I have done the following checks/replaces so far, but still the problem exist:

1) new OEM spark plugs
2) cleaned the MAF
3) Checked battery(between 12.2 -12.6 when cold)
4) The battery voltage goes down to 10.8 volts in the time of starting
5) Alternator is delivering to 14.2 volts
6) Did the test for the fuel pressure( turning ignition key, wait 10 secs, x 3)

Thank you in advance!

My best answer is a bad battery, go to an auto parts store and most of them will test the battery for free.

I had similar symptoms and it was the battery.

If the battery tests OK then I would suspect the starter motor.

The original OEM starter failed at 4 years in my 2005 4runner. You turned the key and "nothing". No click, nothing.
You could hit the starter one time and it would start.
Had to be replaced, so rebuilt it at good shop.
Failed again in 1 year.
Replaced with AM for $240.
This one lasted 4 years and failed.

All failed exactly the same as the OEM

Bought a replacement at Amazon for $100.
It failed in 4years (exactly).
Have another starter from Amazon in there now. It's been in there
3 years and 11 months.

Bought a second starter for backup as car is in Bahamas.

I'll bet it is the starter.

Could also be a worn out 12 year old cable (hot) going to the starter that needs replacing.

Stuff wears out and needs replacing.

Any resolution as this is what my 2005 4 runner is doing. Very intermittent when it will start. It will always start with a jump.

Read my reply above from 1 1/2 years ago....get the battery tested at a good auto parts store for free, etc. etc.!!

Is there a battery you recommend? DO I need to try an optima? I have had the battery tested as it is a Duracell from Sam's club.

If the battery tested OK then I wouldn't buy another one.

Did they "Load" test it...or???

If they did a "Load" test and the battery checked out as good, maybe you need to get the alternator tested, if the alternator is going bad then your battery is not getting charged properly, if the alternator checks out then you may have an issue with your starter.

The battery, alternator and starter are for the most part are the only things that would cause "slow" starting, but you really haven't described your symptoms very well if at all, you only said I have this issue, really need a precise description of your symptoms, i.e. is the engine turning slowly, or turning normally when you're trying to start it and the engine is simply taking a long time to start.

If you want help you have to help us help you, otherwise we're just guessing what your problem is!!

Yes the battery was tested last summer and so was the alternator and they showed no issues.

I only have starting problems when it is hot or above 75 degrees or so.

I can start no issues go to work and then when I try to go to lunch it will not start. Or if I am driving around for errands and say I go to five places maybe once or twice it will not start. The truck can sit for 5 minutes or an hour and it will have a starting issue.

When it won't start it just makes a clicking sound.
I use a jump starter and it always starts with it. I do let the jump starter sit for 30 or so seconds before I crank.

There have been times where it won't start on the first crank but will on the second crank without the jump box. This is rare tho.

I did install a new maf sensor. I never have issues when it is cold.

Duracell is a very good battery. It's made by East Penn and is a Deka, a brand I have used for decades in my cars and boat. You can read up on them at their website

If the battery tests good then you should check the wiring between the battery and the starter motor. If the connections are tight and without corrosion then you will need to pull the starter motor and have it checked. Even if it tests good if you can do mechanical work, I would open it up and check for corrosion. If you can't do mechanical work then maybe consider replacing the starter with a new or premium rebuilt one. I would choose NAPA for that; my preference.

I feel that the solenoid has a dirty/corroded plate, so it's not making a good contract to engage the starter motor. I have taken apart the one in my 92 Camry and my 115 Mercury outboard and repaired both. There are probably some YouTube videos on doing the repair for the T4R G4

It could very well be a bad ground, or other battery/starter connection, it could also very well be as mentioned by ArthurKotb the starter solenoid going bad, unfortunately you have the V8 and the starter is buried under the intake manifold, it's very rare for the original stater to go bad on the V8 because Toyota installed a very good starter, also being under the intake it's very well protected from the environment which gives many starters a short life span, it's quite a job getting the starter out and back in to either rebuild the solenoid or replace the starter, you can get replacement solenoid contacts from Toyota and or aftermarket, the motor portion of the starter will out last the vehicle.

Wow, I did not know that. The one in my 91 Camry was fairly easy to get to and just needed a cleaning after 28 years. After the cleaning it was working fine when I donated it to Goodwill in year 29; a wonderful car. I hated to see it go.

The symptoms that Blamman lists sure sounds like it's the starter. When the car is jump started I'm sure there is a higher voltage going to the starter that would arc through any carbon deposits. It sounds like the starter motor just isn't getting any, or enough, amperage.

It sounds like a job for Toyota, or trusted local mechanic, service.

Thanks for the info AuSeeker

Won’t crank after parked at decline

2006 V8 won’t turn over when parked overnight at a decline (front end facing down). Takes 3 times to crank over. Battery is good, full tank of gas. Incline and flat starts have no issues.

4runner turns over but won't start

I have a 2004 4runner and its been running great, finished my surf this morning and it would turnover and crank but not fire (like it was out of gas). took about 4-5 try and finally started up. no issues when its running, it doesn't stall, not sluggish, power is good. is it the fuel pump? electrical connections? fuel filter? any ideas where to start

I do not know the details of your wiring, but my 2004 pilot had a worn out main relay. That caused elusive no start problems.

My sister's toyota sedan had a worn out ignition switch, due to a giant heavy keyring. It caused an unpredictable no start.

My Volvo 142 had a interior corroded battery cable that passed 12v when tested, but balked at the current (amps) needed to run starter. It looked ok visually, but under red insulation it had corroded.

Just some weird issues not usually considered.
Good luck identifying your issue.
