starting issues

Got a '99 limited auto 4wd with 282k. many times it won't start without messing with shifter. If its parked at an angle, it definitely doesnt want to start, unless you mess with shifter. Things i've done:
1. pulled and clean n safety switch
2. replaced all rubber groments at shifter(shifter felt much better)
could it be just needing a new NSS?...or is there linkage that ages and effects
the shifter throw...anyway i would appreciate any thoughts on matter.
thanks

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is acting up.

And when you say it won't start I'm assuming you mean it won't even attempt to turn over? No clicking no nothing?

Otherwise if its clicking or half ass cranking over, could be starter contacts.

sometimes nothing, sometimes clicks...if i hold the shifter firmly, it cranks up.
might need to just spring for a new switch and eliminate that factor. Just seems like if the switch was bad...it wouldnt start up at all.

The neutral safety switch can also often be cleaned and re-greased to return performance. It might also be slightly out of adjustment. You can always try starting the truck in neutral instead of Park.

Also, if you are getting a single click with no crank, it could be bad starter contacts - that is a much more common failure. I *just* replaced mine (again - it was on a fairly old Denso rebuilt starter).
