Starting Issues

Good day folks,

A brief history.... :
My son has 1990 Forerunner. It experience intermittent starting problems, we told him to replace both battery clamps clean the posts and tighten clamps real good, well he did half the job, replaced a bad looking clamp, cleaned and tighten the vehicle then started and ran good for awhile.

The problem reoccurred, a quick fix at the time (no where anywhere to get a proper fix) inserted screw between clamp and post....vehicle started and ran good.

Now when he goes to start it... you hear one click and vehicle will not start. He can start it if he pushes it downhill.

He also told us when it does this and pushed down on the clutch quite hard it will start.

Can anyone advise where to start the R&R inexpensively before we start looking at the starter itself.

Also, can anyone tell us where the starter relay under the hood is located.

Clean the battery terminals with some baking soda and water. After they are completely clean via the solution and a wire brush apply some readily avail terminal protectant spray. Next follow the negative battery wire to the body attachment point. Make sure the ground connection is tight on the body and engine block.

Semi On topic, but corroded wires and battery posts are a much bigger problem than they appear to be. They are clearly the weak link in the system and not giving the starter the power it's asking for.

That can severely drop the voltage to the starter when cranking - resulting in premature death.

Half the voltage, twice the watts!
