startup question

Since I am a new owner, I am still learning about the 4runner and have this question:

When I first start in the morning, the engine RPM is very high. To me almost remincient of older cars that required a warm up every morning. Once the engine is warm RPM drops.... Is this normal?
If I switch into reverse, the RPM drops like a rock, but at first, the engine really works hard at startup

BTW, I did a search and could not find anything.

My V6 behaves the same way. There's a few reasons for doing it that way. One of the main reasons is to warm the cat quickly so it can get busy controlling emmissions.

All 4Runners do this, but as soon as you shift from park it goes away.
