Steel Wheels Pressure Sensor Options

Hi All:

I have been looking through the forum but not finding exactly what I am looking for, could be user error !!
what I would like to do is mount my winter tires onto some in expensive steel wheels. I have read that FJ wheels work fine.
The thing that I am wondering is what do I need to do for the tire pressure sensors? Can I get aftermarket ones, and when I change the tires my self does something have to be done to the computer every year to make it pick up the new sensors?

My understanding is that the computer will only recognize 5 sensors at a time, meaning that you will either have to have the sensors moved from one wheel to the other, or buy a second set of sensors and have your system reprogrammed for the new ones each time you swap.

The other option is to do what I do which is run one set of tires with no sensors and just ignore the light on the dash board. :

My reasoning went like this: Every vehicle I owned from 1979 to 2012 did NOT have TPMS sensors, and somehow I lived to tell the tale, so while having TPMS is nice, it is in no way a "requirement." I still have eyeballs, a tire pressure gauge and an air compressor.

However, I do the opposite of your plan: My "summer" tires are the FJ Cruiser steelies because I like the way they look. Mine have BFG MTs in 255/75/17 on them and they are awesome off road. During the winter or when I'll be exclusively on the highway, I have the stock alloys with Cooper Discoverer M+S in 265/70/16.

My stock wheels have the TPMS sensors in them, my FJC Steelies just have ordinary rubber valve stems. When I put them on, the TPMS light blinks for a few hours and then goes solid (I think that's how it goes.) In any case, it's easy to ignore.

Also, the guys at Discount Tire said that the sensors for the factory alloys will swap with the FJ Cruiser steelies.

Pull your sensors, get a piece of pvc, put sensors inside. Cap off both ends with a bolt and glue. Drill hole for one sensor to be bolted down and sealed. add pressure till light goes off. Keep said tube in truck. Voila, run any wheel you like!

Do the TPMS off mod which takes 5 minutes and kills the dash light. That's what I did when I replaced my wheels with FJC steelies and eliminated the sensors altogether

Possible causes
- Dirty Oil
- Faulty Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor
- Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor circuit is open or shorted
- Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor poor electrical connection
- Damaged Engine Control Module (ECM)
