Steering Boot Replacement

This is one of the last lingering problems I've been having this summer, and I'm just getting around to it now. Is this boot something that can be replaced by itself? Also, how hard is it to do? It has a rip in it.

Yes. But....a little tear isn't worth replacing the boot over. It's just a dust cover. If it's leaking, replacing the boot won't fix it. It'll still leak, just not as fast.

I've found most steering racks with mileage on them leak some. Big deal, as long as the steering is still solid. Not really worth $900 to get a new rack, not in my mind anyway.

It doesn't leak. Are there going to be problems getting dirt and potentially salt in there? Should I patch it or anything?

Yeah, throw some RTV on it if it's just a tear, or if it's larger than that maybe a little rubber patch. Where those boots are located, they generally don't get very much splash up on them at all. You could probably just leave it alone if it's small.

If you get water up in the boot it will rust a little bit. At least mine did, both sides.
