steering prolems help!!

yesterday i was on the way home from picking my son up from school, when i went around a curve the steering wheel itself would turn but the wheels did not, causing me to run into a ditch, luckly there was a ditch that keep me from missing a light pole by about a foot. i got out to check for any damage…none put it in 4wd climb out of the ditch. had a friend come and get my son, and drove it home, alignment and steering was off, but it mad turns. Anyone have any ideas what could have gone wrong?

p.s. leaks p.s. fluid, but had plenty in reservoir

95, it was in 2wd when it happend

Due to the leak in the power steering you may have sucked a bubble of air in and lost the power steering momentarily, that's all I can think of...

I'd chase down the leak and fix that first.

You did not specify whether the streets were wet or not.

If they were in fact wet, then it sounds like bad understeer. This could be caused by a number of factors. I bet it is worn tires and maybe an alignment issue.

it had just started with a light rain 30 min before accident, and the allignment is off

so it wouldn't be the rack or gear box?
