Steering rack bushings 2010-2013

So my steering rack bushings are going bad and no replacements are available. Only way to replace them at this point is to replace the whole rack ($975), Toyota states on the parts diagram that they are too difficult to replace. No reman options. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a solution? If so, please share. Thanks!

Only way to replace them at this point is to replace the whole rack ($975)

That's just the price of the rack, right? It's something like a 16 hour job to replace the full rack since on the 5th gens the engine has to be lifted a bit.

I speak from experience. Already had mine replaced and it came in somewhere around 3k total.

Notice that you have a 2011 TE, mostly stock that has never been wheeled, so what's the story about your steering rack being replaced? Not being smartass; I have a 2010 TE with almost 71,000 miles now that has been thru some light offroading and hope that this is not something I have to worry about replacing.

Not being smartass; I have a 2010 TE with almost 71,000 miles now that has been thru some moderate offroading and hope that this is something I have to worry about replacing.

Yeah sorry, I'm a complete smartass and my sig is a straight up lie. My truck is pretty heavily modified but I still get people asking me if I actually take it off road so that's where the sig comes from. Check out the link that [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] posted and you'll see I take it off road pretty often.

Was the whole rack going out or just the bushings?

Whole rack went last year. You could feel from lock to lock that it'd get hard to turn the wheel, then ok, then hard to turn again. Just a couple months ago I had the steering shaft replaced as well because it had flat spots in it. The steering shaft was a lot less expensive at around $700 parts+labour.

Hey 1Engineer, Especially after I saw your response I had to make another correction edit to my "offroading".
Also wanted to make the point that I destroyed my tire not during light offroading that day but it happened soon AFTER I returned back to the PAVED highway at the end of the day!

Also if you're dropping over a grand anyways, call up Safari Ltd. in Grand Junction and see if they can make a stronger than OEM rack...they do for the Tacos...

That's how it always happens, bajaing through rough terrain, bruising the tires then heating them up at high speeds. Pressure leaks just slowly enough to get your attention then it fails and it's all over. Sorry to hear that.

Hate to say it but they didn't work for me. Bushing were too small. They may work on non KDSS models, not sure. Apparently they have beefed up steering racks that still go out early when they leave the easy street and pizza cutter life...

Oh well, every action has a consequence. Replaced the whole rack.
