Hello,

I just wanted to see if anyone has successfully replaced worn bushings with the whiteline rack bushings for their 5th gen. I've tried searching for information on the 5th gen but always seem to get info on the 4th gen bushings. I do not believe that the actual rack itself is bad due to no symptoms of failure such as dead spots or odd noises. My only issue is the steering feels loose over bumps and the tires seem follow the road excessively. Ive replaced my CV axels, inner tie rods, outer tie rod ends, lower control arms (new cam bolt kit) with new bushings and ball joints, a long with new wheel hub assembly. I took my 4runner in for an alignment and they told me that the rack bushings are shot so I'm really hoping to get some information on who has done this. Thank you in advance for your help.

I speak from experience. Already had mine replaced and it came in somewhere around 3k total.

Yikes. For that price I would trade mine in and upgrade to a newer model with much less mileage.

That's just the price of the rack, right? It's something like a 16 hour job to replace the full rack since on the 5th gens the engine has to be lifted a bit.

Does it tho? Seemed like a simple enough job on the TSB for rack vibrations from improper spring tension. Although that might have been a GX.

So my steering rack bushings are going bad and no replacements are available. Only way to replace them at this point is to replace the whole rack ($975), Toyota states on the parts diagram that they are too difficult to replace. No reman options. Has anyone else dealt with this and found a solution? If so, please share. Thanks!

There are DIY pour in poly bushing kits. IDK if they work or not. You might still have to drop the rack. You could get lucky and be able to pour it from the top while it's still in. Zero experience with this stuff but it is out there.

I just went through this and the correct part number for Gen 5 2010- 4Runner is Whiteline W13208. Hope this helps other owners.

My steering rack is hurt. And Im going to get it replaced but have them cut the hex heads on the bolts so they can drop the bolts down; instead of up and having to remove the motor.

I will most likely replace it with just an oem unit and try to see if I can replace the factory bushings with the whitelines bushing.

Seriously trying my best to fight the urge to do RCLT and MarRack.

It's not that horrible of a job, and you only have to cut (and replace) 1 of the bolts. Make sure to replace the oil cooler gasket - I tried to reuse and it didn't go well.

I just went through this and the correct part number for Gen 5 2010- 4Runner is Whiteline W13208. Hope this helps other owners.

THANK YOU! I don't know how you figured this out but I'm glad you did. I can't be replacing the entire rack every 2 years when I wear out the rubber OEM bushings. For other owners, W13208 is discontinued. The direct replacement comes from Whiteline's sister company Nolathane.

I am having them installed as I type this post. The shop did have to remove the rack though. They weren't able to replace the bushings while it was in place.

UPDATE: After the bushing replacement the steering was very bad. Almost dangerously bad. I took it to the dealer and they confirmed the rack was moving around a lot. I'm assuming the bushings were not a proper fit and now I'm getting the whole rack replaced. Bummer.
