steering/tracking issues

normal driving it is fine. when i accelerate, especially on the highway, it drives like a front wheel drive car! it moves to the right so i have to turn the wheel to the left to compensate. let off the gas, it straightens out. every wear item has been replaced. i don't know what is causing that. anyone have this problem? solution?

I believe it's the control arms that orientate your rear axle.

The bushings are worn.

Check them out anyway.

I agree with alumarine. Shine a flashlight up onto the control arms to see if the rubber is starting to come out, if so they are bad.

i checked them and they look normal. of course, i can take them off to check the bushings, perhaps use a pry bar to check them as well.

Found the rear bushing of the front right upper control arm bad, perhaps causing the assembly to push back on acceleration, causing what I am feeling. Will update when parts arrive and are installed.

did front upper control arm bushing replacement today. still doing the same thing. give it gas, goes right. swapped tires, no change.

Did you lift the truck up and see if you feel any play in the wheel? Maybe alignment? Tire pressure or tread imbalance? Could be a brake caliper sticking on the right side? Does it happen on a flat road?

no lift. bearings are tight up front. alignment done 2 weeks ago. tires nitro filled properly. tires all new. calipers are fine. doesn't matter the road.

where you from mitch?

Surprised it's not the rear control arms.

Only other thing I can think of is a binding caliper or break shoe.

everything works as it should, with exception to this. i really need some help here. i'm sure someone has had this happen.

I've definitely had it happen, but I replaced my rear axle control arms to fix it.

To say it's like a front wheel drive car is to understate the pull I experienced. When I stepped on the gas, the whole body rocked and pulled ~5° to the right, when I stepped off, the whole body rocked and tracked ~5° back to the left.

The issue is caused by the rear axle tracking forward on one side more than the other when bushings are bad, thus turning the axle a few degrees out of alignment with the body.

Whacked out alignment or a frozen caliper could also cause the issue, but you'd experience the pull at all times (even when not on the gas).

I also had an issue where when I was driving at speed over bumpy roads (potholes in Boston's on and off ramps for example), the car would lurch to one side or another. This was caused by weak shocks and soft suspension, since the suspension is the other major point where the rear axle connects, it too would unevenly adjust the angle of the rear axle.

well, upon further inspection, i find the rear control arm bushings sloppy. with very little effort they deflect and have cracks. time to shell out another 400 in parts.

torque steer is what it's called i guess. now, it's either shell out 400 for new OE uppers and lowers or find another alternate route. i'm tired of pressing stuff out. the shop here wants $140+ to press stuff.

Your pan hard bar (track bar) also centers and holds the axle under the body. I would check the bushings and make sure the holes on the mounts have not turned into ovals allowing the bar (therefor axle) shift from side to side.

Worth taking a look at least...

Maybe DeathCougar has some used.

yep. well, if i'm replacing the arm bushings, i'll do them all. i've heard of guys replacing all of the bushings, but this pressing out of shit bushings is getting old. shop is to expensive. i've seen poly tuff bushing sets but don't know how they hold up. no one has replied as to their quality. OE parts are expensive as well.

i don't want to install used crap like that, that later in a months or 2 i have to replace again. i mean, if i can get a poly set that is worth buying, i'll get a used set and press out old ones and have them ready so the truck is not down. i would still be ahead money and time wise.

had some time to do more looking and sure enough, the rear bushing on the right rear lower CA is torn. i can move the arm by hand. not good. perhaps the cause of the torque steer. although the numbers are right on the alignment machine, the right front tire is getting worn on one side perhaps due to this.
