Steering vibration

I've had my 2005 Sport 4.7 in two dealerships for wheel balancing and alignment and I still get a vibration @ 60-65mph. One dealership did in fact use the adapter necessary for the lug-centric wheels.

There are many discussions on this forum and others regarding vibration on this and similiar Toyota/Lexus vehicles. I just can't understand how Toyota can let this problem go unsolved!

I have a case open with Toyota and did report this as a defect to the NHTSA. So far, no follow-up from either.

This problem ruins an otherwise great vehicle. If not resolved, I trade it in and take a loss.

Is it a buzz or humm vibration or a real wheel bouncing shimmy that you have?

It is a vibration that is felt and can be seen through the steering wheel. To me, having my steering wheel do a dance at highway speeds is unacceptable. I purchased this 4Runner 3 weeks ago and have been tryng to resolve this issue from day-one. I'm not sure how much energy I want to expend fighting Toyota on this but it already seems like a losing battle.

The reason I asked is there is already a thread about the humming vibration that some have in their 4rs. I have heard the hum and felt the buzzy vibration myself and my 4r only has 1100 miles as of today. It's kind of a rumm-rumm-rumm... while the engine is under load like climbing a hill.

If you have a shimmy type of problem that is another issue.
Can you switch the front tires with the rear and get the same problem?

Make sure your dealership uses the Hunter 9700 Force Variation balancer. I had a similar problem with a brand new 2000 4Runner where no matter what was tried - balancing and re-balancing, different shops, new tires - I still had that damn vibration.

Well, I brought it to a Toyota dealer that had that new machine, and it detected two very slightly warped wheels. Toyota got me new wheels and problem solved, it rode very smoothly.

Luckily I have zero vibration in my 04 Limited, but if it ever develops I will only take it to a place that has the 9700.

Try that and see if it works.

the problem you have is NOT the vibration that is the common problem that myself and others have posted on. mine is a vibration/drone that occurs at high speeds, but my steering wheel is not out of control. i know one or two others had the same problem you did. if it is moving a lot while driving, i would push the issue further. did the dealership drive it? if so, what did they think? good luck, i would push arbitration for that issue.

does the vibe get worst when you step on the brakes? If so it
may be the brake rotors.

Some GX470 guys said their problems were from the stock Dunlop tires. One guy changed to Bridgestones and the problem disappeared.

toyota kept pushing the tire thing and that it was the fault of my after market tires and then i got them to put a set of stock wheels/tires on my truck off another runner and the problem was still there.

Ask your toyo tech if they tried using the NVH system of the their Toyota scan tool. this wil help pin point if the vibe is coming from the tire, drive shaft, axle.

my dealer used that computer system and pinpointed it to my tires, which ended up not being the case. They thought I was crazy when I suggested to put on a different set of tires, and then they finally realized I was right all along. It was all for nothing, since Toyota won't fix it.
