Steering wheel bluetooth buttons

Can I easily add the bluetooth buttons to my steering wheel? I have the left side volume, etc.

Adding an aftermarket HU this weekend and picked up the steering wheel control interface with it.

Anyone got part numbers?

Umm, well, not ALL have had success with it. I purchased the ribbon cable along with the BT buttons. Mine never lit up or worked. Never understood why. I'm not the only one. Apparently, 2006+, the success rate is higher. Why? I suspect b/c on these years models, a factory mic is pre-installed by the overhead console (pre2006 do not). This concludes me to believe that other wires (not in pre 'o6 models) that are present for this to work.

Having all this said: I took mine out to have them reLED'd and found that the ribbon cable I installed 4 years ago was ripped. Luckily I bought another one about a year ago. I'll reinstall them and see the outcome. Hell, I'll post pics.

I did not know that the '06 models have an installed mic in the overhead console. Do all '06 have that, or just the Limited models? If I have that, I wonder if there's a way I could use that instead of the external mic that comes with my new stereo . . . Hmmmmmm

No mic is there, but the wiring is. If you take out your overhead console out and feel around inside, toward the driver's side, you will find a blue harness. All 4Runners (SR5, Limited, whatever) have this (to my knowledge). This is where the factory mic is plugged into.

EDIT: I thought I corrected this, but 2006+09 4Runner HAVE the blue connector in the headliner, 2003-2005 do NOT.

Worked like a champ. You need to plug in the ribbon and push it down firmly.

Souls like others have had mixed results. Maybe I lucked out.

If you have an 04, then it SHOULD work for an 05. The ribbon cable only attaches one way (if I remember correctly) and it is fragile. I do remember not forcing it, maybe that's what did it (never properly attached). It was also the my first time I took my airbag off. Anyway, I should know by next week (when my steering wheel controls come back.......... I'll install my new ribbon cable and see what happens).

Ah ha! So I wonder, if I got the factory mic, and connected everything through the steering wheel controls, if I could use the factory mic instead of the external mic that comes with my stereo? Guess I'll have to look into it.

Yep. The factory mic is about $50 I think. I have it. Never installed it, but I don't know if I have to. I've since gotten a GX470 overhead console that comes with a mic, but I'm not 100% sure if that (mic) will wire up to my factory NAV. It's been awhile since I've looked at the pinouts.

Adding BT controls will not automatically make it work with your stock unit. Adding the controls is something you do when you are adding an after market stereo that has a remote input. You then have to add an interface like the PAC SWI. It has nothing to do with a factory mic. With the PAC SWI, you program the buttons to do what you want. An after market HU will use it's own mic.

I just ordered a JVC touchscreen BT headunit and PAC SWI-RC as well as the phone buttons for the steering wheel. Everything is supposed to arrive next week (Monday or Tuesday) so I'll be installing them next weekend.

Last question, if I get the OEM overhead Mic, can I wire that to work with my JVC headunit?

This thread gives me hope for a "second attempt" on the BT buttons. When they come back (mid next week), I'll post pics. (Even if they don't work)

I am doing this mod this weekend.

I got a JVC touchscreen BT head unit, the PAC SWI-RC steering wheel control package and the BT steering wheel buttons and ribbon. My goal is to be able to use the new steering wheel controls to control the BT features on my new headunit.

To install the BT switches in the steering wheel, I'll be using this THREAD starting at post #44 where he details (with good pictures) how to remove the airbag.

Wish me luck...
