Steering wheel bluetooth buttons

I got a JVC touchscreen BT head unit, the PAC SWI-RC steering wheel control package and the BT steering wheel buttons and ribbon. My goal is to be able to use the new steering wheel controls to control the BT features on my new headunit.

To install the BT switches in the steering wheel, I'll be using this THREAD starting at post #44 where he details (with good pictures) how to remove the airbag.

Wish me luck...

Programming the SWI is pretty straight forward. Just make sure you know what you want each button to do before you start the programming.

Finished it all today. Installed the steering wheel controls and the new headunit on Saturday but could not get the SWI to work. Turned out I had not properly tapped the negative wire (the wire wasn't seated in the tap).

The first time I programmed it I misunderstood what two commands meant. Fortunately I tested everything before I put everything back together, so I just re-programmed it and now everything is almost perfect. For some reason, they have the option for Preset Up, but not Preset Down. I now use that button for mute. Oh well.

Overall, I'm very happy with everything!

This thread gives me hope for a "second attempt" on the BT buttons. When they come back (mid next week), I'll post pics. (Even if they don't work)

Slowgoat : those pics were posted from honda_nos member, but he has since sold it and apparently moved/deleted the pics. Don't ya hate when that happens???

Got it installed and my bluetooth buttons work!! YEeeeee Haaaww!! This is the screen that comes up with I hit the top BT button (hang up). HU responds (meaning the BT buttons are properly working) After 4 painful years, it works!!

Buttons light up too!

what happened? Apparently I ripped the ribbon cable (I don't remember doing so) and also did not see the plastic "holders" on each end of the ribbon cable. This keeps it in place and protects it. I have no recollection of the holders, so I more than likely botched the install.

Cool man.

Never too late to get it right. :trophy:

Did you use 22/18 gauge wire taps?

And now my buttons don't work. :frusty: Drove to work yesterday, everything was fine. Got in the truck to go home and the steering wheel buttons are no longer working. WTH??

When I got home I removed the HVAC controls and confirmed the SWI-RC is still connected and the fuse had not blown. When I turned on the key, I got the 8 blinks to confirm it is still receiving power, etc. The only thing I can figure is that somehow one of the wires which connects the steering wheel buttons to the SWI became disconnected. I also noticed this morning that the steering wheel buttons only light up when I push them, but they are otherwise dark.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this? I won't have time to pull the head unit out and check the wires, but thought I'd see if I might be missing something obvious.

Ah ha! So I wonder, if I got the factory mic, and connected everything through the steering wheel controls, if I could use the factory mic instead of the external mic that comes with my stereo? Guess I'll have to look into it.

Sorry to revive this old thread. Wondering if anyone has figured out what YetiX was referencing here. I’ve done the research on the Bluetooth control buttons, just wondering if the factory mic will work with a aftermarket HU. This would be a very clean install instead of using the external mic of a aftermarket HU. I tried sending a PM to YetiX to see if I could ask him some questions but have not heard back. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Just a question, when you said you sent YetiX a PM, are you sure you actually sent a PM instead of leaving a "Visitor Message" on his profile page?

I ask because I see you did indeed leave a "Visitor Message" on his profile page and you may have also sent him a PM. but there's no way for me to see/know if that's a fact but I or anyone can see "Visitor Messages" on anyone's profile page and just an FYI a Visitor Message will not notify a member of that message, they would have to just happen to see it.

That all being said I see that YetiX was last on the forum on 03-02-20 so I'm sure if a PM was sent he will see it as soon as he visits the forum again whereas a "Visitor Message" as I mentioned he may very well miss seeing, also if you notice when I "mentioned" him twice in this post I put an @ symbol in front and as a part of his name which will also notify him that someone "mentioned" him and he most likely will visit this topic to see what's up.

Thanks Skip, in fact I did not receive a PM so thanks for mentioning me here.

dsanford, I was not able to find a way to get the factory microphone to work with an aftermarket head unit. I did, however, get the steering wheel buttons to work again and they've worked ever since. Hope that helps!

I was definitely doing that wrong. Thank you for the info on how the messaging works. I have not been a active member of any forum for a long time so I have to admit I’m a rusty, I will be more diligent to make sure I’m in the right area and using the proper features.

Thanks AuSeeker &
Thanks YetiX for the reply and answering my question.
