Steering wheel cross-reference?

I'm sure there are more people out there like me that are really wishing they had a replacement leather steering wheel for their 3rd gen. The black leather wheels in our rigs do last a very long time (compared to other makes/models that are this old).....but I still want a fresh one. Problem is, I can never find a nice black 4-spoke wheel for sale.


However, if I had to guess I'd say that there are other steering wheels from other Toyota's of the same time period that would fit just fine. I just can't find a cross-reference for this, and was wondering if anyone could help me (us?) out. You know you want a nice fresh steering wheel on your rig.

Would it attend your needs just to put some new leather on it? Over here, upholstery guys do leather seats, door interiors, steering wheels, arm rests, etc.

Or are you unhappy with the middle section (where the airbag is)?

I want one that I can't wear down like mine I have. Id like a lexus wood grain or a limited 3rd gen wood grain or something like that.

I'm in the same boat as you, quicksilvr. My steering wheel has become very worn and cracked with age on the top. I've seen a few replacements on Ebay but they are super spendy. I'll most likely end up taking mine to a local upholstery place and have them replace the leather.

Have you thought about just getting a wrap or cover? Mine came with a nice one when I bought it...makes it a little thicker which I like and doesn't get tacky in the summer when hot like my old trucks did.

I've looked at wraps and covers, and I don't want either.

I've also contacted several upholstery shops locally, and none of them will do a steering wheel. It's pretty dang hard to do, and do well.

A factory Toyota wheel with low miles on it is what I want.

Mines the same, I have a cover on it but didnt someone around here wrap theres in rope or something? I thought that was pretty cool

I found that a decent looking replacement steering wheel was at least $100. So I called around a few places and only found one guy to reupholster a steering wheel. When I took it to him he said he was one of the few in all of southern California that would do one. It's hard to find a guy but he did a great job on mine and it cost $150 which wasn't much more than buying a used one.

I picked up a "new" wheel for my truck from California Mini Truck when I first got it. I don't remember what I paid, but I don't remember it being much.

I replaced mine last summer with a 4 spoke from the junkyard that looks like it never had a hand on it! Cost me $10. There is a "Toyota Graveyard" within 15 mins of me and I score some pretty sweet stuff out there when the guy is around.

Yeah...and you're in SoCal. I'm in the midwest. lol I don't think ANYONE here will do it.

For those of you who have replaced your wheel, how difficult was it? Anything special to do with the airbag? Does anyone have a link to a how-to walk through?

I've been trying to find a spare temporary wheel so I can send my original in to these guys. The reviews I've read of their work say that it's exceptional. Not cheap, but looks like it'd be worth it.
