Steering Wheel options?

Yello,

So, I ran into a bit of a snag with my 1995 4Runner build. I'm almost done, but it needs windows and a functional horn. The horn is the tricky part; the 4Runner came with some sort of Momo steering wheel and the horn doesn't work so I'm assuming it needs a horn kit of some sort.

Are horn kits universal? I'd imagine they are dependent on the steering wheel, but that's just a guess.

Any suggestions re: horn kits? Or, would it be easier getting another steering assembly altogether with the horn relay? Any ideas what options are out there or where to buy an aftermarket steering wheel from? The steering wheel/hub/horn is a bit of an anomaly to me. I've managed to stumble my way through most of the thing, but I'm at a loss as to what my options are.

If I buy an aftermarket steering wheel, I'm assuming I'd have to pick up a hub as well? Sort of clueless on this bit.

I found a horn relay on trdparts.com, however, there's no diagram so I don't know if that's the part I need. My bodyman friend says that the horn kit should consist of a plastic ring with a brass contact patch on one side and a single pigtail off the other end.

Any auto parts place that sells aftermarket steering wheels should be able to help you with a horn kit, or just go back to a stock wheel.

This thread should give you a basic idea of how the horn contacts on the steering column work: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/classic-t4rs/112614-horn-contacts-repair-walkthrough.html#post1034667/. If that doesn't help, go to a junkyard and yank a steering wheel off and you'll see.

For a functional horn, all you need is to get 12v to the horn itself on the front grill. You can do that with a button anywhere within reach and probably pass safety. Or convert back to a stock steering wheel. Or check out Grant steering wheels, I know they have OEM horn connections.
