Hey Steve: Did you ever correct your shimmy. I have a 2003 with the exact same issue. A shimmy every time I go over a bump. Had wheel alignment but still there. Tires are new. Mechanic suggested struts. Doesn’t matter what speed I’m going when I drive a rough road it shimmies at ever crack in the asphalt. Like you described it’s side to side movement that is very abrupt but quickly stops when pavement is even and no sign of repairs. When I refer to cracks in the asphalt it’s those repairs that are across the asphalt versus along and have been filled but still create a bump. Please help.
Steering wheel shake over any bump at any speed.

So some history. I just bought this car from a dealer in California. I live in Southern Ontario Canada where rust is enemy #1. It has 94,000 miles on it and very little if any rust underneath. Everything is tight on the front end. When I had it safetied by the Toyota dealer I mention the shimmy. That’s why he suggested the alignment. As I said he recommended struts if it was still there. I read a lot of posts on the 3rd Generation 4Runners where it seems everything was replaced. I was hoping to avoid that by now where the actual cause had been identified. There was a lot of steering rack mentioned on one thread which seemed very promising but there seems no reason to change mine right now. I’m still leaning towards the struts as they look original. Must be someone that found the issue with the shimmy on these 4Runners. You’d think Toyota would have the answer by now.

The first two things that I would inspect are tie rod ends and shock absorbers.
